8 January – African National Congress Foundation Day

John Langalibalele Dube founded the South African Native National Congress (SANNC) in Bloemfontein on 8 January 1912. Its primary purpose was to give black and mixed-race Africans the right to vote or to unite Africans and lead the struggle for fundamental political, social, and economic change.

9 January – NRI (Non-Resident Indian) Day or Pravasi Bharatiya Divas

On 9 January, India celebrates Pravasi Bharatiya Divas to acknowledge the contribution of the overseas Indian community to the development of the country. On this day, we also commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s return to Mumbai on 9 January 1915.

10 January – World Hindi Day

Hindi is an Indo-Aryan language spoken by millions of people in India and around the world. It is one of the official languages of India and is written in the Devanagari script. World Hindi Day is a time to recognize and appreciate the cultural and linguistic diversity of the Hindi-speaking community and to promote the use and study of the Hindi language.

11 January – Death anniversary of Lal Bahadur Shastri

Lal Bahadur Shastri was an Indian freedom fighter and politician. He served as the second Prime Minister of India. In order to increase milk production and supply, he promoted the White Revolution. Additionally, he promoted the Green Revolution in 1965 so India could produce more food.

11 January – National Human Trafficking Awareness Day

Human trafficking is a persistent issue, so it is commemorated on 11 January to spread awareness.

12 January – National Youth Day

Swami Vivekananda Jayanti, also known as his birth anniversary, is celebrated every year on 12 January. He was born on 12 January 1863. Since Swamiji’s philosophy and the ideals for which he lived and worked could be a great source of inspiration for the Indian youth, the government declared it a National Youth Day.

13 January – Lohri Festival

Lohri is a traditional festival celebrated in the northern states of Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi. It is a celebration of the winter solstice, and it is a time for people to come together, share food, and enjoy music and dance.

14 January – Makar Sankranti

It celebrates the end of winter as well as the beginning of the harvest season.

Pongal is one of the most popular Indian festivals and is celebrated worldwide by the Tamil community. Pongal is celebrated in Tai month on the Tamil solar calendar. It is a four-day festival dedicated to the Sun God. Pongal will be observed on 14 January 2023 according to the Gregorian calendar.

15 January – Indian Army Day

Indian Army Day is observed every year on 15 January.  Indian Army Day is celebrated on 15 January every year in India, in recognition of Field Marshal Kodandera M. Cariappa‘s (then a Lieutenant General) taking over as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from General Francis Bucher, the last British Commander-in-Chief of India, on 15 January 1949.

21 January – Tripura, Manipur, and Meghalaya Foundation Day

As a result of the North Eastern Region (Re-organisation) Act, 1971, Tripura, Manipur, and Meghalaya became full-fledged states on 21 January 1972. It is therefore a statehood celebration day for Tripura, Manipur, and Meghalaya on 21 January.

23 January – Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Jayanti

We celebrate Subhash Chandra Bose Jayanti on 23 January every year on his birthday.

24 January- National Girl Child Day

25 January- National Voters Day

National Voters’ Day is observed every year in India on 25 January. This is a campaign to get young people involved in politics. The primary purpose of the observance is to encourage voters to cast their ballots, encourage others and be part of the democratic process. Voting is one of the most fundamental rights in a democracy. It is celebrated every year on 25 January to raise awareness and educate people about the benefits of tourism.

26 January- Republic Day

Republic Day is observed every year in India on 26 January. It is observed on the day because the fact that constitution of India came into effect on the same day and India became a sovereign nation free from British rule. On November 26, 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted the Constitution of India, so we celebrate Constitution Day on November 26 every year.

26 January – International Customs Day

International Customs Day is a holiday that celebrates the work of customs organizations and the important role they play in promoting international trade and cooperation. Customs organizations are responsible for enforcing customs laws and regulations, collecting duties and taxes, and protecting national borders.

28 January- Birth Anniversary of Lala Lajpat Rai

Lala Lajpat Rai was born on 28 January 1865 in Punjab. He was an Indian independence activist and Politician. He was popularly known as “Punjab Kesari”.

30 January – Martyrs Day or Shaheed Diwas

30 January is celebrated as Martyrs Day or Shaheed Diwas every year. It is celebrated in memory of Mahatma Gandhi and the sacrifice of three revolutionaries of India. On 30 January 1948, the ‘Father of Nation’ was assassinated, and on 23rd March 3 heroes namely Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar of the nation were hanged to death by the British.

30 January – World Leprosy Day

World Leprosy Day is observed on the last Sunday of January to focus on the target of zero cases of leprosy-related disabilities in children.
