World Hindi Day is observed on January 10. The day is observed to promote the language. January 10 also marks the anniversary of the language being spoken for the first time in the United Nations General Assembly.

Hindi is an Indo-Aryan language spoken by millions of people in India and around the world. It is one of the official languages of India and is written in the Devanagari script. World Hindi Day is a time to recognize and appreciate the cultural and linguistic diversity of the Hindi-speaking community and to promote the use and study of the Hindi language.

World Hindi Day: History

In 1949, the first time Hindi was spoken in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) was celebrated as World Hindi Day. The first World Hindi Conference was inaugurated by Indira Gandhi in 1975. Over the years, conferences have been organized in different parts of the world. World Hindi Day was celebrated for the first time on January 10, 2006. India’s then Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, announced this decision.

World Hindi Day: Significance

All Around the world, this day is dedicated to promoting the Indian language as a global language. The purpose of it is also to raise awareness of the usage of the Indian language, as well as the issues that persist regarding its use and promotion.

World Hindi Day: Celebration

Since 2006, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs has organized events and activities to promote Hindi usage and promotion. It is also sometimes celebrated by the Indian Postal Department by issuing special stamps. Students and schools can celebrate this day by organizing debates, discussions, Hindi poetry recitals, literature classes, plays, quizzes, and more. Debates and discussions can also be held by a variety of organizations, including Hindi clubs.
