Shifts in India’s Fashion Landscape: Uniqlo and Nike Strengthen Presence
India’s western fashion market is experiencing a mixed bag of results following a robust post-pandemic recovery. While some global brands like Marks & Spencer and Adidas are grappling with declining sales, others, such as Uniqlo and Nike, are witnessing significant growth. This disparity in performance indicates a potential structural shift in consumer preferences, particularly among younger shoppers who are increasingly favoring functional clothing over trend-driven styles.
Mixed Performance Among Global Brands
The Indian fashion landscape is currently marked by contrasting fortunes for various global brands. Retail giants like Marks & Spencer, Benetton, and Adidas have reported weaker sales figures, reflecting a broader trend of slowing demand. In contrast, brands such as Uniqlo and Nike are expanding their presence in the market, with Nike India reporting a 14% sales increase in FY25, up from 4% the previous year. Uniqlo also saw a sharp rise in growth, reaching 45% compared to 31% in FY24. This divergence suggests that while some brands struggle, others are successfully adapting to changing consumer preferences.
Experts attribute this uneven performance to a structural shift in the fashion and lifestyle market. Devangshu Dutta, founder of retail consultancy Third Eyesight, notes that consumers are gravitating towards more functional clothing. He emphasizes that while trend-led brands still exist, they are becoming smaller and facing challenges in setting or following trends. This shift is particularly evident among Gen Z consumers, who are influential in shaping fashion trends despite having less spending power than older demographics.
Post-Festive Season Recovery
Sales figures across major retailers indicate a slowdown in growth due to high inflation and stagnant incomes, which have curtailed discretionary spending. However, there are signs of recovery following the festive season. Lifestyle, India’s largest department store chain, reported a 5% growth in the last fiscal year, rebounding from a 4% decline in FY24. This recovery aligns with a broader trend of improving sales, although the growth remains uneven.
Uniqlo’s India operations have been particularly successful, driven by strong customer responses, store expansions, and increased brand awareness. Kenji Inoue, Uniqlo India’s chief financial officer and chief operating officer, stated that India is now one of the company’s fastest-growing markets in Asia. The young demographic, coupled with a growing emphasis on quality and functional clothing, has significantly contributed to Uniqlo’s progress in the region.
Selective Consumer Behavior
According to the Retailers Association of India, organized retail segments, including apparel, footwear, and beauty, recorded single-digit growth last fiscal year. However, demand has improved post-festive season, with double-digit growth returning for some brands. Kumar Rajagopalan, the association’s chief executive, noted that while demand is on the rise, it is not uniform across the board. Indian consumers are becoming increasingly selective, favoring brands that offer strong value propositions rather than the cheapest options.
This shift in consumer behavior is reflected in company results. Apparel Group’s sales grew by 25% in FY25, a slowdown from the previous year’s 37% growth. Inditex Trent, which operates Zara in India, reported flat sales after an 8% increase in FY24. Similarly, Adidas experienced a decline in revenue growth, dropping to 5% from 20% the year before, while Marks & Spencer and Benetton saw their sales fall by 12% and 3%, respectively.
Challenges and Opportunities in the Market
Despite the challenges faced by many global and premium brands, India remains an attractive market for international fashion companies. The country’s large population and the growing acceptance of western-style clothing among younger consumers present significant opportunities. However, most brands are vying for a limited share of demand concentrated in major urban centers, making growth increasingly competitive.
As the fashion landscape evolves, brands that can effectively respond to changing consumer preferences and offer innovative, high-quality products are likely to thrive. The current market dynamics underscore the importance of understanding consumer behavior and adapting strategies accordingly to capture the attention of discerning shoppers in India’s vibrant fashion scene.
