India Unveils New Strategy for Environmental Accounting 2026-2030
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has launched a new strategic framework aimed at enhancing environmental accounting in India. Building on previous initiatives, the document titled ‘Strategy for Environmental Economic Accounts in India: 2026-2030’ is designed to address data gaps and expand the scope of environmental accounts, focusing on critical areas such as forests, water, minerals, and biodiversity.
Expanding on Prior Efforts
Since adopting the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) outlined by the United Nations, MoSPI has made significant strides in developing environmental accounts. This new strategy outlines a clear roadmap to continue this progress, enabling better measurement and monitoring of vital environmental data. Prior to this, MoSPI had already initiated studies and released reports on various environmental topics, including forests, wetlands, and urban ecosystems.
Comprehensive Areas of Focus
The newly released document extends the work started in the earlier strategy, broadening the scope to include vital subjects. These encompass carbon stocks, soil resources, environmental-related activities, and the overall impact of natural resources on the economy. The selection of these topics is based on recommendations from the ‘Green National Account in India: A Framework’ report and aligns with international SEEA-CF standards.
Importance for Stakeholders
As part of the broader System of National Accounts 2025, the document emphasizes the significance of natural resource accounting. It aims to deepen the understanding of the connections between the economy, environment, and natural resources. Moreover, it equips individual States and Union Territories with the necessary guidelines to either initiate or enhance their environmental accounting efforts.
A Forward-Looking Approach
The strategy is not just a static document; it is intended to evolve over time, ensuring that it remains relevant as new challenges and opportunities arise. The action plan included provides clear milestones for the coming years, fostering a systematic approach to environmental-economic accounting in India.
