Elon Musk Claims Oligarchs Are Hindering Starlink’s Launch in India

NEW DELHI: Elon Musk has accused “certain oligarchs” of obstructing Starlink’s entry into the Indian market. His remarks came during the India Mobile Congress (IMC), where Starlink announced its readiness to launch services in India as soon as the country is prepared. Musk claimed that these obstacles are part of an effort to maintain a monopolistic grip on the Indian populace.

Musk emphasized the need for Starlink in India, citing the lack of broadband connectivity in many villages. He stated on X that Starlink could provide high-speed, affordable internet to those who currently lack access. “Unfortunately, we are being blocked by certain oligarchs in order to maintain their monopolistic chokehold on the Indian people,” he said.

Starlink has already established 20 gateway sites in India and developed security measures to ensure that user data remains within the country. Lauren Dreyer, VP of Starlink business operations, indicated that the company is prepared to begin satellite broadband services as soon as it receives the necessary approvals. There are concerns that competitors like Eutelsat OneWeb and Reliance Jio may receive regulatory approval ahead of Starlink due to ongoing trade discussions between the US and India.

Dreyer noted that Starlink has been laying the groundwork for its operations in India by forming partnerships with local companies such as Jio and Airtel. She stated that Starlink aims to collaborate with Indian operators and government entities to provide connectivity to underserved areas. As the final approvals are processed, she reiterated that Starlink is ready to serve India when the country is ready.

The now-disbanded Digital Communications Commission recently approved recommendations on satellite spectrum allocations, which could benefit satellite service providers. These companies are expected to receive spectrum for five years, with a usage charge of 5% of adjusted gross revenue. There may be reduced charges for those providing connectivity to rural regions with limited terrestrial infrastructure. Starlink has already secured a license and established the necessary ground infrastructure to comply with regulatory requirements.
