Indian Railways Launches Ambitious High-Speed Initiative with Seven New Bullet Train Corridors

Imagine traveling from Delhi to Varanasi in under four hours or covering the distance between Mumbai and Pune in less than an hour. Indian Railways is working towards making this a reality with the announcement of seven new bullet train corridors. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman revealed these plans during her Union Budget speech earlier this year, aiming to enhance connectivity and promote environmentally sustainable passenger systems.

Seven New High-Speed Rail Corridors: Key Details

The proposed Delhi-Varanasi corridor will connect the national capital with eastern Uttar Pradesh, reducing travel time to approximately 3 hours and 50 minutes. This route aims to boost tourism, connect secondary cities, and foster economic development across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal.

The Mumbai-Pune corridor will significantly cut the journey time to just 48 minutes, linking two major urban centers. This project is designed to address the increasing passenger and freight demands in the region, alongside upgrades to congested trunk routes and suburban rail services.

The Pune-Hyderabad corridor will connect Maharashtra and Telangana, with an expected travel time of about 1 hour and 55 minutes. This route will enhance high-speed connectivity across western and southern India, supporting regional economies.

The Hyderabad-Bengaluru route is part of a developing southern high-speed rail network and is projected to reduce travel time to around 2 hours. This connection will improve mobility between key IT, manufacturing, and service centers in Karnataka and Telangana.

Travel between Hyderabad and Chennai is expected to take approximately 2 hours and 55 minutes, facilitating business activities and inter-state commuting across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry. The Chennai-Bengaluru corridor aims to bring travel time down to about 1 hour and 13 minutes, further expanding the high-speed rail network in southern India.

Lastly, the Varanasi-Siliguri corridor will connect important religious, educational, and medical centers across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal, with an expected travel time of around 2 hours and 55 minutes. This will mark the first high-speed rail service in eastern India, enhancing trade, services, and inter-regional mobility.

India’s First Bullet Train

India is also developing its first bullet train corridor between Ahmedabad and Mumbai, with the initial section expected to become operational in the coming years. Bullet trains typically operate at speeds of around 300 km/h, while some high-speed rail services operate at speeds of 220-250 km/h.

The first section of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor is anticipated to open by August 2027, while two high-speed trains are currently being manufactured by BEML and are expected to undergo testing in the first half of 2027.
