Indian Railways to Launch High-Speed 280 km/h Trains in 2026, Following 2027 Bullet Train Project Initiation
Indian Railways is set to launch its first high-speed bullet train, aiming for a speed of 280 km/h by early 2027. The project, which began in 2017, has seen costs nearly double to Rs 866.87 crore. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor will not only be India’s first high-speed rail line but also marks a significant step in domestic manufacturing capabilities for Indian Railways.
Indian Railways ‘Make in India’ Bullet Train
The rollout of the first prototype is scheduled for March 2027, with extensive testing planned by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO). The Surat–Bilimora section of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad project is expected to become operational by August 2027. The initial trainsets will be designed for speeds of 280 km/h, with future models potentially reaching 350 km/h.
BEML Limited has been awarded a contract worth Rs 866.87 crore by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai to design and manufacture two prototype high-speed trainsets. Each trainset will consist of eight coaches and is designed to operate at speeds exceeding 250 km/h. BEML has established a dedicated ‘Aditya’ High-Speed Rail Complex in Bengaluru for this purpose, and manufacturing has already commenced.

Experts describe the bullet train program as a significant engineering leap for India. Building high-speed trains requires different capabilities compared to traditional coaches. The trains must ensure a smooth ride at high speeds while balancing strength and weight. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad project is just one part of Indian Railways’ broader high-speed rail initiative. The Union Budget has announced plans for seven additional high-speed rail corridors. These new routes include Mumbai-Pune, Pune-Hyderabad, and Delhi-Varanasi, among others. Developing domestic manufacturing capabilities for bullet trains could help meet the rolling stock needs of these proposed corridors efficiently.
