Vicky Kaushal’s Mahavatar Begins Filming in January 2027; Stree 3 Set to Start Production Late 2027 with Holiday Release in 2028
Rajkummar Rao and producer Dinesh Vijan made a notable appearance at Day 2 of FICCI Frames 2026 to promote their upcoming film, Prahaar. The duo took the opportunity to reflect on the success of their previous hit, Stree, and shared exciting updates about the horror comedy universe, including the much-anticipated Stree 3.
Rajkummar Rao Reflects on Stree
Rajkummar Rao reminisced about the origins of Stree, describing it as an “independent small budget film” that garnered significant success. He praised director Amar Kaushik, saying, “He’s hilarious. He’s like us. So, we all were like laundas on the set! We would crack jokes and try to have fun with each other while shooting the scenes.” Rao emphasized that the camaraderie among the cast contributed to the film’s energy, which is evident on screen.
He also shared a personal anecdote about the film’s initial box office performance. “When it started collecting very well and earned Rs. 70-75 crores, Amar was very nervous. He asked, ‘Film kuch zyada nahin kama rahi hai?’! I said, ‘Arre, acchhi baat hai na?’. He replied, ‘Arre nahin. Pehli film itna business kar rahi hai?'” This light-hearted moment highlights the unexpected success that Stree achieved.
Updates on Stree 3
As the conversation shifted to the sequel, Stree 2 (2024), which grossed over Rs. 500 crores, Rao noted that Kaushik was better prepared for the success this time. “At that time, he was prepared. Then, he was like ‘Aur kamaye’!” Rao mentioned that Kaushik’s journey continued with other successful films like Bala (2019) and Bhediya (2022), solidifying his reputation in the industry.
Dinesh Vijan then provided insights into the future of the franchise. He stated, “Amar Kaushik is the most integral part of Stree and the entire horror comedy franchise.” Vijan revealed that Kaushik is set to direct Mahavatar, a film centered on Bhagwan Parshuram’s story, which will begin production at the end of January. Following this, Stree 3 is scheduled to go on floors next year, with a release planned for 2028.
What to Expect from Stree 3
Vijan teased fans about Stree 3, urging them to “expect the unexpected.” He warned, “Anything you have thought, remove that from your mind. If I say anything more, you’ll be very upset with me because he has just finished writing it.” He assured fans that while familiar elements will return, the storyline will offer surprising twists. “So, it might be a nice Independence Day or Christmas day release in 2028!”
Mahavatar will feature Vicky Kaushal in the lead role, while Stree 3 is expected to bring back familiar faces such as Shraddha Kapoor, Pankaj Tripathi, Aparshakti Khurana, and Abhishek Banerjee. Akshay Kumar is also rumored to play a significant role.
