NMDC Opens New Pellet Plant in Chhattisgarh, Boosting Production
NMDC Ltd has proudly launched its new pellet plant in Nagarnar, Chhattisgarh, with an impressive capacity of 2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). This facility is a vital component of a larger Rs 5,427-crore integrated project aimed at enhancing iron ore processing operations. The project connects the company’s mining activities at Bacheli to its steel manufacturing plant at Nagarnar through a sophisticated infrastructure of a slurry pipeline and processing plants.
The ambitious initiative features a new iron ore processing plant located in Bacheli, a 15 MTPA slurry pipeline, and the newly commissioned pellet plant. The 135 km long slurry pipeline is designed to efficiently transport processed iron ore concentrate from Bacheli to Nagarnar. This method serves as a more efficient alternative to road transport, addressing logistical challenges associated with conventional transportation.
The plant’s first production was closely monitored via live feed at NMDC’s headquarters by Chairman and Managing Director Amitava Mukherjee, along with senior leadership, since inclement weather prevented on-site visits. These new facilities establish a streamlined process for transforming iron ore fines and slimes from the Bailadila mines into concentrated pellets, utilizing advanced Straight Grate Induration technology suitable for steelmaking.
Amitava Mukherjee expressed his pride in the project’s success, stating, “Today is a day of immense pride for everyone at NMDC. This has not been an easy project to execute. It involved the processing facilities, the actual slurry pipeline, and the pellet plant. But today is a red-letter day—a day we have been waiting for a long time. This is the day when our collective dream is coming true.” His comments reflect the significance of this achievement not just for the company, but also for the local economy.
The commissioning of this pellet plant reinforces NMDC’s strategic position within the iron ore value chain, encompassing mining, beneficiation, slurry transportation, and pellet production. It also diversifies the company’s portfolio by introducing a new value-added product, enabling better utilization of iron ore fines and slimes produced from its Bailadila operations.
This initiative represents a critical part of NMDC’s larger strategy to expand and diversify, aiming to increase its iron ore production capacity to 100 million tonnes over the long term. The slurry pipeline plays a significant role in this expansion, passing through 61 villages in the Bastar and Dantewada districts. It is designed to minimize road transport, provide an alternate means of evacuation, and reduce reliance on railways, thereby ensuring a dedicated link between NMDC’s Bacheli operations and the Nagarnar plant.
