Nature Enthusiasts Gather for Wildlife Walks at NZP
The National Zoological Park (NZP) in New Delhi successfully hosted its fourth edition of the ‘Butterfly and Dragonfly Walk’ alongside the fifteenth edition of the ‘Sunday Bird Walk’. These events took place during the Big Butterfly Month and were designed to engage citizens in biodiversity monitoring, species documentation, and raising awareness for wildlife conservation. The nature walks ran from 6:30 AM to 10:30 AM under the expert guidance of Sh. Rohit Sharma, a Bird Expert, and Sh. Ramver, a Butterfly and Dragonfly Specialist, assisted by enthusiastic volunteers.
The program attracted a diverse group of participants, including bird and butterfly lovers, students, wildlife photographers, and community members interested in biodiversity. A total of 15 individuals joined the walks, which were well-received by officials from the NZP, including the Director, who interacted with attendees and enhanced their experience throughout the event.
During the walks, participants recorded observations of 47 different bird species, accounting for over 750 individual birds. Additionally, they documented 8 butterfly species, 10 dragonfly species, and 5 damselfly species. These findings contributed valuable data to field biodiversity records, emphasizing the ecological richness present within the National Zoological Park and the necessity of ongoing biodiversity assessments.
The experts provided participants with in-depth knowledge about the ecology, behaviors, and conservation of birds, butterflies, and dragonflies, emphasizing their vital roles as pollinators, pest controllers, and indicators of environmental health. The program further allowed individuals to connect with nature, enhance their species identification skills, and foster a greater appreciation for wildlife conservation.
Dr. Sanjeet Kumar, the Director of the National Zoological Park, remarked on the significance of such nature walks in enhancing participants’ field skills and understanding food webs. He praised the initiatives for promoting biodiversity documentation and strengthening public appreciation of wildlife conservation. The walks concluded with an engaging discussion, a feedback session, and a celebratory group photograph with the experts and zoo officials.
The NZP limits participation to 20-25 individuals for each Sunday Nature Walk to ensure a quality experience. Interested participants must register in advance via a designated Google Form, which is open from Monday to Friday. Registration details can be found on the official website of the National Zoological Park and through the ‘NZP Sathi’ mobile application.
Looking ahead, the NZP will celebrate Wildlife Week 2026 from October 2nd to 8th, featuring a variety of educational and participatory activities aimed at promoting wildlife conservation. These activities will include nature walks, competitions, talks, and creative contests, allowing students from both government and private schools across the Delhi-NCR to participate. All events during Wildlife Week are free of charge, and participants will receive complimentary entry to the park, alongside their teachers and families.
Through these initiatives, the National Zoological Park aims to strengthen connections between citizens and nature, promote citizen science, and inspire greater public involvement in wildlife conservation efforts.
