US Takes Control of Iran’s Largest Crypto Network Amid Ongoing Peace Talks
After launching ‘Epic Fury’ against Iran, the United States has intensified its economic pressure by imposing sanctions on Nobitex, the country’s largest cryptocurrency exchange. Announced on Tuesday, the sanctions target Nobitex and several of its senior executives, accusing the platform of enabling the Iranian government and sanctioned entities to evade Western restrictions. This action is part of the Trump administration’s broader efforts amid ongoing tensions involving the US, Iran, and Israel.
Details of the Sanctions
The US Treasury Department claims that Nobitex processed over half of Iran’s digital asset income last year and was integral to the country’s sanctions evasion network. Treasury officials allege that the exchange facilitated the movement of assets out of Iran following the initiation of US combat operations, allowing the Iranian regime to safeguard its wealth despite internet blackouts. Among those sanctioned are Nobitex chairman Amir Hossein Rad, CEO Seyed Ali Khoee, and co-founders Seyed Mohammad Ali Aghamir Mohammad Ali and Seyed Mohammad Aghamir Mohammad Ali.
Other Iranian Entities Sanctioned
In addition to Nobitex, several other Iranian crypto exchanges and executives have also faced sanctions. Wallex, Iran’s second-largest crypto exchange, and Bitpin, which received around 10% of the country’s crypto inflows, are included in the sanctions list. Ramzinex, a Tehran-based exchange founded in 2018, has processed over $2.45 billion in transactions and is accused of facilitating sanctions evasion linked to the IRGC and a government-backed financial institution.
Rationale Behind the Sanctions
The sanctions stem from an investigation that identified Nobitex as a central player in a parallel financial system that processed substantial funds for Iran’s central bank and the IRGC. The Treasury Department noted that Nobitex continued its operations during a government-imposed internet shutdown, processing millions in transactions. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that while Iran’s economy is deteriorating, the regime has exploited digital asset technologies to evade sanctions and transfer wealth abroad. The latest sanctions are part of a comprehensive economic pressure campaign against Iran, which includes secondary sanctions on countries engaging with Iranian-controlled entities.
