Procter & Gamble Reports Inflation Impact on Consumers

MUMBAI: Procter & Gamble (P&G) India has reported that rising inflation is impacting consumer spending habits, leading to a more cautious approach among buyers. The company anticipates short-term challenges to growth due to macroeconomic risks. V Kumar, CEO of P&G India, noted that inflation is affecting various sectors, including food, energy, and healthcare, significantly altering consumer psychology.

Inflationary Pressures and Supply Chain Challenges

The consumer goods giant, which offers products like Head & Shoulders shampoos and Tide detergents, is facing increased costs due to volatility in crude oil prices, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Executives indicated that raw material costs, particularly plastic, have surged by nearly 50%. Srividya Srinivasan, the incoming CFO of Procter & Gamble Hygiene and Health Care (PGHHCL), emphasized the company’s focus on securing supplies despite these challenges. P&G had previously warned of a potential $1 billion post-tax impact on its fiscal 2027 profits due to rising oil prices.

The prolonged conflict has disrupted supply chains and contributed to inflation, negating some benefits from recent GST cuts. Many fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies have already implemented price hikes in response to these pressures. While a peace deal between the US and Iran is on the horizon, its long-term viability remains uncertain. Additionally, concerns about deficient monsoons linked to El Niño are raising further risks to consumption. Srinivasan pointed out that delayed monsoons are affecting growth rates.

Strategic Focus on India

In light of these challenges, P&G is intensifying its efforts in India, adapting to shifts in consumer behavior driven by instant deliveries and online shopping. The company plans to enhance its product offerings and cater to increasingly discerning consumers. Despite the current uncertainties, Srinivasan expressed a positive outlook on India’s medium-term growth prospects.
