TRAI Unveils New Mobile Recharge Regulations: 30-Day Plans, Call-Only Options, and More
Prepaid mobile users in India will soon have more options for recharging their plans, thanks to a new consumer protection framework introduced by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The updated regulations, which focus on plan validity and voice-and-SMS-only services, aim to address concerns raised by Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha regarding the limitations of existing prepaid plans.
The new rules, notified on September 22, 2026, require telecom service providers to offer a wider range of voice-and-SMS-only Special Tariff Vouchers (STVs). These will include plans with a validity of 30 days or less, as well as options that renew on the same date each month. Additionally, providers must offer corresponding voice-and-SMS-only vouchers for bundled plans with shorter validity periods, ensuring that tariffs for these vouchers are appropriately reduced.
Addressing the 30-Day Validity Concern
Chadha previously highlighted the issue of 28-day validity on many prepaid plans, which effectively forces users to recharge 13 times a year instead of the standard 12. He advocated for the introduction of 30-day validity options to align with the calendar year. Furthermore, he emphasized the need for voice-only prepaid plans for consumers who primarily use their phones for calls and do not require mobile data.
Expansion of Voice-and-SMS-Only Plans
The amended framework significantly increases the availability of voice-and-SMS-only STVs, catering to consumers who do not need internet services. Chadha noted that these options would particularly benefit senior citizens and budget-conscious users who primarily rely on their phones for voice communication. He expressed optimism that these regulatory changes reflect the power of public support in prompting action from elected representatives and regulatory bodies.
