Inside the Vande Bharat Sleeper: Rail Minister Vaishnaw Showcases New Seats and Modern Washrooms

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw unveiled the first look of the Vande Bharat sleeper train on Saturday, highlighting its innovative features aimed at enhancing comfort for overnight travelers. This new-generation service promises to transform long-distance rail journeys with upgraded amenities and improved passenger experiences. The minister emphasized that the initiative is part of a broader effort to make rail travel more accessible and enjoyable for middle- and low-income families.

Innovative Features of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train

The Vande Bharat sleeper train boasts several enhancements designed to elevate the travel experience. Among the key upgrades is an advanced suspension system that ensures a smoother ride across all coaches, including the driver’s cabin. The introduction of semi-automatic couplers aims to minimize jerks during travel, contributing to overall passenger comfort. Additionally, the train is equipped with modern amenities such as CCTV cameras for enhanced security, redesigned seating for better ergonomics, and eco-friendly washrooms that focus on reducing water wastage.

A new pantry layout has also been implemented, providing improved service capabilities for onboard staff. The inclusion of berths for staff on duty further enhances the operational efficiency of the train, ensuring that passengers receive attentive service throughout their journey. These thoughtful upgrades reflect the commitment of Indian Railways to prioritize passenger comfort and safety.

Launch and Operational Details

The first Vande Bharat sleeper train is set to launch later this month, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to inaugurate the service in January 2026. This fully air-conditioned train is specifically designed for long-distance and overnight travel, making it a significant addition to India’s rail network. Minister Vaishnaw announced that two train sets have already been completed and have successfully undergone trial runs.

The inaugural service will operate between Guwahati and Kolkata, covering key stops such as Howrah and Kamakhya. Each train will consist of 16 coaches, including 11 AC three-tier coaches, four AC two-tier coaches, and one AC first-class coach, accommodating a total of 823 passengers. The introduction of this sleeper train is part of a larger plan, with eight additional Vande Bharat sleeper trains expected to be rolled out in the next six months, bringing the total to 12 by the end of the year.

Route and Fare Structure

The new Vande Bharat sleeper service will significantly benefit various districts along its route. In Assam, the train will serve Kamrup Metropolitan and Bongaigaon, while in West Bengal, it will connect Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, Maldah, Murshidabad, Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly, and Howrah. This extensive coverage aims to enhance connectivity and provide a reliable travel option for residents in these regions.

Fares for the Vande Bharat sleeper train have been set competitively, starting at Rs 2,300 for a one-way journey between Guwahati and Kolkata. The pricing structure includes Rs 2,300 for AC three-tier, Rs 3,000 for AC two-tier, and Rs 3,600 for AC first-class tickets. This pricing strategy is designed to make the service accessible to a broader audience, aligning with the government’s goal of promoting rail travel as a preferred mode of transportation.

Future Developments in Indian Railways

In addition to the Vande Bharat sleeper train, Indian Railways is also making strides towards launching the country’s first bullet train, which is anticipated to debut by August 15, 2027. This ambitious project reflects the ongoing commitment to modernize India’s rail infrastructure and enhance the overall travel experience for passengers. The introduction of high-speed rail services, alongside the new sleeper trains, signifies a transformative phase for Indian Railways, aiming to meet the evolving needs of travelers across the nation.
