India Expands Digital Payment Network in Qatar: Discover Where You Can Use UPI

Shopping in Qatar just became more convenient for Indian travelers, as the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) has been launched at Lulu Group’s stores. This initiative, which follows the introduction of UPI at Hamad International Airport’s duty-free outlets, aims to enhance financial transactions between India and Qatar. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal inaugurated the service, emphasizing its potential to streamline payments and foster trade between the two nations.

UPI Launch and Its Significance

The introduction of UPI in Qatar marks a significant expansion of India’s digital payment network abroad. Minister Piyush Goyal inaugurated the service at a Lulu store, highlighting its importance in facilitating smoother and more cost-effective transactions between India and Qatar. This launch is part of a broader partnership involving NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL), Qatar National Bank (QNB), and Japanese payment gateway NETSTARS. Goyal expressed optimism that the integration of UPI would not only simplify transactions but also enhance trade relations between the two countries.

Earlier in September, NIPL and QNB had already implemented UPI at point-of-sale terminals across Qatar for local merchants. Goyal urged more financial institutions in Qatar to adopt this system, underscoring its potential to revolutionize trade. He stated that the UPI system allows for near real-time transfers at minimal costs, which will expedite the movement of money and capital between the two nations.

Benefits for Indian Residents and Travelers

The new UPI facility is expected to significantly benefit the approximately 830,000 Indians living in Qatar. It will facilitate quicker and cheaper remittances, making financial transactions more accessible for the Indian diaspora. With UPI, Indian travelers can now make payments in real time without the need for foreign currency or international cards. This development not only simplifies the shopping experience for Indian nationals but also supports local Qatari businesses by enabling them to accept digital payments seamlessly.

Goyal emphasized that the launch of UPI in Qatar is a milestone for the Indian community and a step towards strengthening financial ties between the two nations. The integration of UPI into everyday transactions is anticipated to enhance the overall shopping experience for Indian consumers in Qatar, allowing them to engage more freely in the local economy.

UPI’s Impact on Digital Payments

Since its inception nine years ago, UPI has transformed the landscape of digital payments in India. Goyal noted that 85% of Indian digital payments are processed through UPI, which accounts for nearly 50% of global digital transactions. The platform currently handles around 640 million transactions daily, showcasing its widespread acceptance and efficiency.

The successful implementation of UPI in Qatar positions the country as the eighth nation to adopt this payment system. Goyal praised QNB for its role in linking NIPL with Lulu Group, enabling UPI payments for customers in Qatar. This collaboration is expected to further enhance the financial ecosystem in the region, making it easier for businesses and consumers alike to engage in digital transactions.

Future Prospects and Expansion

Looking ahead, the launch of UPI in Qatar is seen as a stepping stone for further financial integration between India and other countries. Goyal’s call for more financial institutions in Qatar to adopt UPI reflects a vision for a more interconnected global economy. As UPI continues to expand its reach, it is likely to play a crucial role in facilitating international trade and investment.

The integration of UPI into Qatar’s payment systems is not just a technological advancement; it represents a commitment to fostering stronger economic ties between India and Qatar. As more countries recognize the benefits of UPI, the potential for enhanced trade and financial cooperation grows, paving the way for a more robust global marketplace.
