India Achieves 300 GW Non-Fossil Fuel Capacity Milestone in Clean Power Initiative Ahead of 2030 Goals
India has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing 300 GW of installed non-fossil fuel-based electricity generation capacity as of July 31, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. This figure represents over 60% of the country’s target of 500 GW by 2030. The total installed electricity generation capacity in India is approximately 552 GW, with non-fossil sources now accounting for more than 54% of this total.
Solar Dominates Non-Fossil Capacity
Solar power is the largest contributor to India’s non-fossil capacity, totaling 164.59 GW. Wind power follows with 58.14 GW, while hydro power accounts for 57.24 GW. Additionally, there is 11.75 GW of bio-power and 8.78 GW of nuclear power. Solar capacity has seen remarkable growth, increasing from 2.8 GW in 2014 to around 165 GW today. Wind power capacity has also expanded significantly, rising from 21 GW in 2014 to 58.14 GW. The government reported that India added a record 55.29 GW of non-fossil fuel-based electricity capacity in 2025-26, with solar contributing 44.6 GW and wind adding 6 GW.
Doubling of Renewable Power Generation
The increase in installed capacity has led to a substantial rise in renewable electricity generation. According to the ministry, renewable energy generation jumped from 190.96 billion units (BU) in 2014-15 to 477.79 BU in 2025-26. Domestic manufacturing capacity for solar equipment has also grown, with the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) for solar photovoltaic modules exceeding 200 GW, compared to just 2.3 GW in 2014. The ministry attributes this growth to initiatives like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which promotes domestic manufacturing of high-efficiency solar modules.
Future Capacity Expansion
With non-fossil capacity currently at 300.50 GW, India needs to add approximately 199.5 GW to meet its target of 500 GW by 2030. The ministry indicated that this expansion will coincide with efforts to lower industrial emissions and develop the green hydrogen sector. The National Green Hydrogen Mission is being implemented to position India as a hub for the production, use, and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives. The latest capacity figures were released by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
