China Accelerates Sulphur Futures Initiative Amid Price Volatility from Iran Conflict
China is set to launch its first sulphur futures contracts this year, driven by heightened price volatility due to the ongoing conflict in Iran. This move aims to provide a necessary hedging tool and enhance pricing power in the global sulphur trade, according to sources cited by Reuters. The Dalian Commodity Exchange is expected to introduce these futures in the fourth quarter, pending final regulatory approvals.
Iran Conflict Speeds Up Plans
Sources indicate that the Dalian Commodity Exchange had long intended to introduce sulphur futures, but the urgency increased as the Iran conflict intensified price fluctuations. China, the largest consumer of sulphur globally, imports approximately 50% of its annual sulphur needs. However, customs data reveals that imports during the first five months of this year have dropped by over 50% compared to the previous year.
Prices Remain Sharply Higher
Sulphur is essential for various industries, including fertiliser production, copper mining, and nickel refining. Prices have been on the rise for years, exacerbated by the Iran conflict, which has tightened global supplies. Nearly half of the world’s seaborne sulphur trade passes through the Strait of Hormuz. Recently, spot prices for solid sulphur in eastern China reached a record 11,850 yuan (USD 1,743.16) per metric tonne before easing to 9,043.5 yuan per tonne as shipments resumed through the Strait. Despite this correction, prices remain 292% higher than a year ago.
Boost to Hedging and Pricing Power
Analysts at Huatai Futures suggest that the introduction of sulphur futures will enable users to hedge against ongoing price volatility. They also believe that these contracts could facilitate the accumulation of visible commercial inventories at the exchange, enhance supply-chain resilience, and improve China’s pricing power in the global sulphur market.
