Air India Revamps Cabins and Lounges to Enhance Revenue Potential

Air India is embarking on a significant transformation of its fleet, focusing on enhancing the passenger experience as part of a broader strategy to boost revenue and achieve profitability. The airline plans to invest approximately $400 million to upgrade the inflight cabins of its older aircraft, including Boeing 787s and earlier 777 models, which have faced criticism for outdated seating and food quality. With an emphasis on attracting high-value passengers, Air India aims to modernize its offerings and improve customer satisfaction.

Investment in Cabin Upgrades

Air India is committing around $400 million (approximately Rs 3,622 crore) to revamp the inflight cabins across its wide-body fleet. This initiative targets Boeing 787s and older 777 aircraft, which have received complaints from passengers regarding worn-out seating and declining food quality. The airline’s chief customer officer, Rajesh Dogra, confirmed that eight Boeing 787-8 aircraft will be equipped with fully refurbished interiors this year. The first retrofitted Boeing 787 is set to enter service on European routes soon, showcasing upgraded business class features that include suite-style seating with sliding privacy doors, enclosed storage compartments, redesigned seat controls, and adjustable armrests with built-in water-bottle storage.

Focus on Premium Traffic

As part of its strategy to enhance revenue, Air India is placing a strong emphasis on premium traffic. The airline’s leadership believes that attracting high-value passengers is crucial for improving earnings. Dogra stated that the cabin quality has been a significant concern during the airline’s transformation journey, and addressing this issue is a priority. The airline is also set to induct around six new wide-body aircraft this year, further enhancing its fleet capabilities. Additionally, Air India is expanding its ground infrastructure by introducing new premium lounges at major international gateways, including San Francisco and New York, following the inauguration of its first lounge in Delhi earlier this year.

Improving Customer Satisfaction

Air India is already witnessing positive outcomes from its fleet upgrades. Dogra noted that operating planes with new interiors has led to improved customer satisfaction, particularly on routes to Dubai, New York, and London. The airline’s net promoter score, a key indicator of customer loyalty, has significantly increased since the introduction of new aircraft and refurbished cabins. By focusing on premium cabins, especially in business and first class, Air India aims to enhance ticket yields and offset lower fares in economy class. The airline’s ongoing efforts to modernize its fleet and improve service quality are expected to attract more high-value passengers, supporting its goal of returning to profitability.

Future Prospects

Looking ahead, Air India is optimistic about the impact of its modernization efforts. The airline’s commitment to upgrading its fleet and enhancing customer experience is seen as a vital step in its journey towards profitability. As more new aircraft join the fleet and additional upgrades are implemented, Air India anticipates further improvements in customer satisfaction and operational efficiency. The airline’s focus on premium traffic and high-value passengers is expected to play a crucial role in its financial recovery and long-term success in the competitive aviation market.
