IT Minister Vaishnaw Announces Upcoming AI Regulation Consultation Paper, Emphasizing Safety and Deepfakes
Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Friday that the Indian government is set to introduce regulations for artificial intelligence (AI), beginning with a consultation paper to be released next month. This paper will address key issues such as AI safety, the risks associated with its use, deepfakes, a human-first approach, and the need for skilling in the sector. Vaishnaw emphasized that while legislation is necessary, it will not suffice on its own.
The consultation paper will prioritize AI safety and tackle the growing sophistication of deepfakes, which Vaishnaw described as a significant societal nuisance. He expressed concern that deepfakes can mislead the public and create harmful narratives. The regulatory framework will also focus on various AI-related harms, including cybersecurity threats, user safety, and psychological impacts, ensuring that technological advancements do not leave vulnerable populations behind.
Vaishnaw stated that the industry must take primary responsibility for managing these risks, including safety and cybersecurity. He highlighted the importance of a techno-legal solution that involves all stakeholders in the regulatory process. This announcement follows recent amendments to IT rules aimed at addressing AI-generated content, which include stricter timelines for removing unlawful material from online platforms.
