Government Aims to Boost Cooktop Production and Facilitate Imports
The Indian government is taking significant steps to boost the supply of induction cooktops and cooking vessels as part of a broader initiative to transition from gas-based cooking to electric alternatives. This move comes in response to rising concerns over liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) availability. To address the immediate demand for cooktops, the government is facilitating imports while also accelerating domestic production. Key officials, including Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, have engaged with industry representatives to discuss strategies for enhancing supply and reducing reliance on gas.
Government Initiatives to Increase Supply
In light of the growing demand for induction cooktops, the Indian government is actively working to increase their availability. Recent discussions among senior officials, including the Secretary of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), have focused on strategies to meet this demand. The government plans to import cooktops to address immediate shortages while simultaneously ramping up domestic production. To facilitate this, there are indications that the government may relax certain regulations, such as postponing the implementation of a quality control order on consumer electronics by six months. This move aims to bolster domestic manufacturing capabilities and ensure a steady supply of induction cooktops.
Industry Response and Challenges
The shift towards electric cooking is not without its challenges. Currently, induction cookers have a significant import component, with around 60% of their parts, including printed circuit boards (PCBs) and microcrystalline glass, sourced from abroad. Additionally, the vessels required for cooking often need specialized coatings that are also imported. Industry executives have called for concessions, including reduced import duties on essential components and a decrease in Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates. The initial surge in demand for LPG cylinders led to stockouts on various online platforms, highlighting the urgency of the situation. However, industry sources report that orders for cooktops have been placed and are expected to arrive in the coming weeks, including via air freight.
Cost Benefits of Electric Cooking
The government is also encouraging large kitchens, such as those in factories and restaurants, to transition from LPG to electric cooking. Estimates suggest that converting an industrial kitchen to induction cooking may require an initial investment of approximately Rs 15 lakh. However, this investment could lead to significant annual savings, as the current costs of LPG for such kitchens can reach around Rs 50 lakh per year. The potential savings of Rs 35 lakh annually could result in a payback period of about three years, making the switch to electric cooking financially attractive in the long run. Notably, several companies, including Danfoss India and Jubilant Foodworks, have already begun exploring electric cooking options to reduce their reliance on LPG.
Market Trends and Future Outlook
As the demand for induction cooktops surged, some manufacturers initially raised prices. However, many have since experienced a decline in prices due to market fluctuations, particularly influenced by geopolitical events such as the ongoing conflict in Iran. The government’s proactive measures to ensure the availability and affordability of induction cooktops reflect a commitment to transitioning towards more sustainable cooking practices. With the expected influx of imported cooktops and the push for domestic production, the market is poised for a significant transformation in the coming months.
