Urban India Embraces Domestic Help Apps

Urban households in major Indian cities are increasingly turning to domestic help apps for a variety of chores, from unpacking suitcases to preparing for gatherings. This trend, which began as a convenience, has rapidly expanded in cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Delhi NCR. Companies like Snabbit and Urban Company’s InstaHelp are experiencing significant growth, driven by repeat usage and an aggressive expansion of services. Snabbit, for instance, has seen its monthly job count soar from 100,000 to 1 million in just six months, highlighting the rising demand for on-demand domestic assistance.
Rapid Growth of Domestic Help Apps
The domestic help app market is witnessing a remarkable surge. Snabbit, a Bengaluru-based startup, has reported a tenfold increase in monthly jobs, reaching a staggering 1 million from 100,000 in August 2025. Founder Aayush Agarwal emphasized the app’s role as a reliable backup for households, providing support during times of absenteeism or when extra help is needed. This convenience has made Snabbit a go-to solution for many urban residents. Similarly, Urban Company’s InstaHelp, launched just last year, has also shown impressive growth, with 1.6 million orders recorded in the last quarter alone. This rapid expansion indicates a strong demand for domestic help services in urban areas.
Customer Retention and Usage Patterns
Customer retention is a crucial factor for the success of these domestic help apps. Users are increasingly relying on these services, with some booking assistance up to eight times a month. A Bellandur resident shared that she uses Snabbit about twice a month, particularly when her regular help is unavailable or when hosting guests. Urban Company’s CEO, Abhiraj Singh Bhal, noted that the company is experiencing encouraging levels of customer usage and retention. However, despite the growth in orders, InstaHelp reported an adjusted EBITDA loss of Rs 44 crore, attributed to investments in supply onboarding and training. This highlights the challenges that come with rapid expansion in the domestic help sector.
Innovative Business Models
The business models of these domestic help apps differ from traditional gig economy structures. Snabbit offers its service professionals fixed shifts, ensuring a monthly income of Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000, regardless of the number of jobs completed. This approach aims to provide stability for workers, which is crucial in a sector often characterized by irregular income. Similar pay structures are observed across competing platforms, indicating a shift towards more sustainable employment practices in the gig economy. Investors are keenly observing these developments, noting that the long-term success of these apps will depend on customer retention rather than just order growth.
Supplementary Services in Domestic Help
Experts suggest that the current usage of domestic help apps is largely supplemental rather than a replacement for full-time domestic workers. According to Artham Khetan, an engagement manager at Redseer Strategy Consultants, these services primarily serve as a backup when regular help is unavailable. This trend reflects a growing acceptance of on-demand services in urban households, allowing families to manage their time more efficiently. As these apps continue to evolve, they may play an increasingly integral role in the daily lives of urban residents, providing convenience and flexibility in managing household tasks.
