Life and Career

Roberto Burle Marx was born on August 4, 1909, in São Paulo, Brazil. He was a prominent Brazilian landscape architect, painter, and plant collector. He had a deep passion for nature and art from a young age. Burle Marx attended the National School of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro, where he studied painting, sculpture, and landscape design. His exposure to modernist movements greatly influenced his artistic and design sensibilities.

Burle Marx is best known for his innovative contributions to landscape architecture. He introduced modernist and abstract elements into his designs, incorporating bold geometric patterns, vibrant colors, and a wide variety of native plants. He was a pioneer in using Brazilian native flora in his landscapes, promoting conservation and a sense of national identity.

Some of his notable landscape projects include the Copacabana Beach promenade in Rio de Janeiro, the Ibirapuera Park in São Paulo, and the Ministry of Education and Health building garden in Rio de Janeiro. He also collaborated with renowned architects such as Oscar Niemeyer.
