IndiaAI Workshop Unleashes Data Potential for AI Advancements

A workshop focused on AIKosh, India’s national platform for datasets and models under the IndiaAI Mission, took place today at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi. This significant event gathered officials from the government, industry leaders, academic figures, and startup innovators to discuss strategies for leveraging India’s data assets to fuel advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The workshop commenced with a welcome address by Shri Mohammed Y. Safirulla K, Director of the IndiaAI Mission, who introduced the AIKosh platform. Following this, Shri Sudeep Shrivastava, COO of IndiaAI Mission, outlined the day’s agenda, setting the stage for collaborative discussions.

In his keynote speech titled “Data as National Wealth: India’s Imperative for Sovereign AI,” Shri Saurabh Vijay, CEO of IndiaAI Mission, emphasized the strategic value of data in achieving India’s sovereign AI goals. He called for collective responsibility in utilizing AIKosh to elevate India’s standing in the global AI landscape.

“AIKosh is the platform India has provided for the ecosystem. If we are to match the best in the world, our collective ownership of this initiative is what will take it to that global standard,” said Vijay, highlighting the collaborative spirit needed.

The formal inauguration was led by Dr. Saurabh Garg, Secretary of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), who stressed the necessity of enhancing India’s data ecosystem for responsible data usage that aligns with burgeoning AI capabilities. “The defining challenge we are solving alongside the IndiaAI Mission is ensuring that data is discoverable, understandable, interoperable, and securely accessible across all ministries,” Garg remarked.

The workshop included a presentation on the overview of AIKosh by Ms. Shikha Dahiya, Joint Director of the IndiaAI Mission, and Shri Swadeep Singh, General Manager of Data Science at IndiaAI Mission.

Fostering Data Governance and Sharing

The first session titled “Thought Leadership: Unlocking AI Data at Scale” featured experts from various sectors, including Google DeepMind and the World Bank. This panel discussion centered on lawful data sharing, maintaining privacy, and the implications of specific data types. Moderated by Shri Suhel Bidani of the Gates Foundation, the session encouraged input from the audience.

Subsequently, three keynote addresses followed. Shri Nand Kumaram from NeGD discussed data’s role in governance, Ms. Tanusree Deb Barma from UIDAI talked about scaling data for digital public goods, and Shri Abhishek Upperwal from SoketAI highlighted the demands of the open data ecosystem.

Understanding Developer Needs

The second session focused on “What the Developer Ecosystem Needs,” aimed at model builders, innovators, and data collectors. Discussions revolved around the necessary datasets, platforms, and architectures to create AI applications suited to India’s unique environment. This session was moderated by Dr. Santosh Misra from PwC, and concluded with engaging audience interactions.

Collaborative Agreements to Enhance AI Infrastructure

During the workshop, important Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed to bolster India’s AI and Digital Public Infrastructure. A partnership was established among IndiaAI, the National e-Governance Division, and the Centre for Digital Public Infrastructure to enhance cooperation in developing AI-enabled governance solutions. The MoUs aim to provide comprehensive support in technical, architectural, and policy aspects.

Another MoU was signed between the IndiaAI Mission and the EkStep Foundation to promote collaboration in advancing India’s AI capabilities. This agreement is set to merge resources across the ecosystem to facilitate scalable AI innovation.

Driving Towards an Actionable Future

The workshop concluded with a debrief session, where moderators shared insights from their discussions. Key follow-up areas included prioritizing high-value datasets and enhancing data harmonization. In his closing comments, Shri S. Krishnan, Secretary of MeitY, emphasized the necessity of nurturing an ecosystem that promotes responsible data usage.

“The critical aspect of all technology is the impact it has on society, how it enhances quality of life, and what it offers to the people of the country,” Krishnan noted. He highlighted the potential for AI to propel India towards its vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047.

The workshop symbolizes a crucial step towards strengthening India’s data framework and increasing collaboration among data custodians, tech developers, and academic institutions to propel AI innovation.
