Oil Prices Decline 2% Amid US-Iran Conflict Resolution Efforts and Ongoing Saudi Supply Concerns

Oil prices experienced a decline of over 2% as markets reacted to mixed signals regarding supply stability. Brent crude fell by $2.28, or 2.14%, settling at $104.30 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) dropped $2.20, or 2.33%, to $92.41. The decline comes amid ongoing negotiations between US and Iranian officials in New York, which have raised hopes for a potential truce.

Negotiations and Supply Concerns

The discussions between US and Iranian negotiators are focused on a phased approach to de-escalate the conflict. Sources indicate that Iran may agree to reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the lifting of the US economic blockade. However, Iranian officials have stated that there will be no concessions regarding their nuclear program, even if the US accepts the proposal.

The Strait of Hormuz is critical for global oil supply, with crude flows reaching 33.7 million barrels in the week starting September 20, according to preliminary data from Kpler. This figure aligns closely with the previous week’s exports, highlighting the strait’s importance amid ongoing tensions.

Diesel Export Ban and Market Reactions

In addition to the geopolitical factors, discussions around a potential US ban on diesel exports are influencing crude prices. This prospect is widening the gap between US crude futures and the global Brent benchmark, suggesting that US refiners may process less crude if they cannot export diesel. The Brent premium over WTI has reached its highest level since May for three consecutive days.

Concerns over disruptions to oil flows from Saudi Arabia have also emerged, particularly due to attacks by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis. Military chiefs from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan are set to discuss support for Saudi Arabia in light of these attacks, which have targeted the Saudi-backed government in Yemen and impacted oil exports from the region. Despite these tensions, flows through the Strait of Hormuz have remained relatively stable, according to Kpler data.
