India-US Trade Deal Framework Prepared for Timely Signing, According to Official
Negotiations for a trade agreement between India and the United States are progressing smoothly, with a framework deal ready for signing at an appropriate time, according to an official statement on Monday. India is aiming for a tariff structure that provides a competitive edge over other countries. The discussions are focused on both a framework deal and a bilateral trade agreement (BTA), with both sides expressing clarity on the terms being negotiated.
Competitive Advantage in Trade Agreements
The official emphasized that trade agreements are designed to secure preferential market access and create a comparative advantage. Both parties are aware of each other’s expectations and the contents of the framework deal. The official noted that there are no significant differences between India and the US, and the negotiations are not facing any challenges. Trade between the two nations continues to grow, with an increase in India’s energy imports from the US.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently dismissed media reports suggesting issues in the negotiations. He reiterated that the teams from both countries are fully engaged in crafting a balanced and commercially meaningful agreement that benefits businesses, farmers, workers, and consumers in both nations.
Section 301 Investigations
On June 2, the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) released findings from a forced labor investigation, proposing additional tariffs on imports from 60 economies. Imports from Canada, Ecuador, the European Union, Indonesia, Mexico, and Pakistan could face a 10 percent tariff, while imports from India and China may be subject to a proposed 12.5 percent tariff. These proposed tariffs are still under consideration and have not been finalized.
Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agarwal stated that India is in discussions with the USTR regarding the Section 301 investigations related to forced labor and excess industrial capacity. He indicated that the outcome of these investigations is being closely monitored. The USTR initiated these investigations in March 2026, and Agarwal noted that the final results could take four to six months or longer to complete.
