CPWD Celebrates 172 Years of Service at Annual Day Event

The Central Public Works Department (CPWD), a key engineering arm of the Government of India, marked its 172nd Annual Day on July 12, 2026, at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. This landmark event celebrated over 172 years of unwavering commitment to national development and infrastructure excellence.

Shri Manohar Lal, the Hon’ble Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, was the Chief Guest for the occasion. He was joined by dignitaries including Shri Srinivas Katikithala, Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs; Shri Satinder Pal Singh, Director General of CPWD; Shri Mohd. Kamal Ahmad, Director General (Training), CPWD; and Shri Pradeep Kumar Jha, Joint Secretary (Works & Central Vista), Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. A varied audience of senior officials, retired personnel, employees, and distinguished guests gathered to commemorate this significant milestone.

Launching New Initiatives

During the inaugural session, Minister Manohar Lal unveiled a series of important publications and digital initiatives from CPWD. These included the latest Technical Publications, the annual report titled Nirman Bharati, and the innovative e-NIRMIT ERP Modules, which demonstrate the department’s commitment to transparency and enhanced project management through digital tools.

Additionally, the Minister launched two notable books: “India’s Urban Transformation: Reflections from Policy and Practice” and the coffee table book “India’s Urban Momentum: Towards Making Our Cities Liveable.” These publications highlight India’s dynamic urban development path and the Ministry’s initiatives for sustainable and inclusive growth in urban areas.

Recognizing Excellence

As part of the festivities, outstanding contributors within the department were honored with Director General’s Medals, Commendation Certificates, and Certificates of Merit in recognition of their exceptional efforts. Awards were also given for the Best Completed Projects, further emphasizing CPWD’s dedication to quality in public service.

Moreover, participants who successfully completed various capacity-building programs with leading academic and professional institutions received certificates, underlining CPWD’s dedication to continuous learning and skill enhancement.

A documentary film showcasing CPWD’s significant achievements and innovative infrastructure projects was presented during the event, highlighting the impact of modern construction technologies and recently developed ERP systems.

Technical Innovations Discussed

Ahead of the celebratory event, a Technical Session took place on July 11, 2026, where Prof. K. V. L. Subramaniam from IIT Hyderabad delivered a keynote address focusing on emerging technologies and sustainability in the construction sector. A Senior Officers’ Conference followed, led by the Director General, addressing ongoing reforms and the future direction for CPWD.

Minister Manohar Lal urged the department to embrace eco-friendly practices, promote modern technologies, enhance workforce capacity, and accelerate digital transformation in public infrastructure projects. He emphasized the significance of transparency, efficiency, and timely project execution, marking a renewed commitment to contribute to a developed Bharat.

Looking Ahead

Shri Srinivas Katikithala commended CPWD for its pivotal role in shaping quality public infrastructure throughout India. He stressed the importance of broadening CPWD’s perspective in public works and proposed the establishment of a National Council for Public Works to foster innovation and best practices across the sector.

Shri Satinder Pal Singh, the Director General, welcomed the guests and recounted the department’s achievements over the past year. He reaffirmed CPWD’s commitment to high-quality infrastructure through professional excellence and modern methodologies, including the adoption of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and advanced construction materials.
