India-US Trade Deal: Framework Agreement Prepared for Bilateral Trade Pact
NEW DELHI: The Indian government announced on Monday that discussions for the first phase of a bilateral trade agreement with the United States are progressing well. Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal stated that a framework deal is ready and will be signed at “the right time.” He emphasized that both nations are aligned and do not foresee any challenges ahead. Trade between the two countries is reportedly growing, with increased energy imports aiding India’s diversification efforts.
Agrawal dismissed concerns about a lack of consensus during recent talks led by U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. He noted that both sides are aware of each other’s expectations regarding the framework deal and the broader negotiations. Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal echoed this sentiment, asserting that both nations are committed to a balanced agreement that benefits businesses, farmers, workers, and consumers.
India’s demand for a comparative advantage in the trade deal was reiterated by Agrawal. He highlighted that trade agreements should focus on comparative advantages, particularly as India seeks tariff benefits over competitors like China and ASEAN nations in sectors such as textiles and footwear. The timing of the final agreement will hinge on the U.S. announcement of a new tariff structure, with a current 10% additional levy set to expire by July 24.
Agrawal indicated that it could take four to six weeks after the provisional findings of ongoing investigations into forced labor and structural overcapacity for final tariff decisions to be made. He suggested that these issues would be addressed within the framework of the bilateral trade agreement, which is currently under negotiation.
