Government Officials Review Progress of Tribal Welfare Schemes in Madhya Pradesh
Today, a high-ranking team from the Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA), led by Secretary Smt Ranjana Chopra and accompanied by Additional Secretary Sh Manish Thakur, conducted a significant field visit in the Indore division of Madhya Pradesh. The purpose of the visit was to evaluate the implementation of key welfare schemes and engage directly with tribal beneficiaries. They were joined by Sh Gulshan Bamra, Principal Secretary of Tribal Welfare for Madhya Pradesh, along with other senior officials from the State’s Tribal Welfare Department.
The day’s activities commenced at the Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) in Morod, where the Secretary interacted with students from Classes 6 to 12. She observed the advanced digital smart classrooms utilized for daily lessons. During their conversations, students shared their dreams of becoming engineers, entrepreneurs, and professionals—a promising sign of the quality education provided under initiatives like PM-JANMAN and DA-JGUA, especially for children from Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs).
Supporting Local Weavers and Aspirations
The next stop was the Bunkar Suvidha Kendra in Maheshwar, Khargone district, which is operated by a Sahayata Samuh under the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM). Here, tribal women engage in the traditional craft of weaving Maheshwari Sarees, producing between 1,000 to 2,000 sarees daily. These products reach consumers through beneficial partnerships with initiatives like TRIFED and local Self Help Groups (SHGs). Notably, one of the weavers had recently showcased her work on a fashion ramp in Delhi, highlighting the growing recognition of their craft. The Secretary also took time to meet ST students, including a promising NEET aspirant, as well as those holding Forest Rights Act (FRA) pattas.
Facilitating Community Needs
At the Adi Sewa Kendra in Keriyakheri, another focal point of the visit, the Secretary observed tribal community members registering their needs, including ration cards and other scheme enrollments. This centre recently facilitated a nationwide public hearing, enhancing grievance redressal efforts in the community. Engaging with local ST women, the Secretary learned about their appreciation for having such a centre close to home.
Community-Led Tourism and Health Initiatives
The team also explored a Tribal Homestay in the Khargone district, which represents a model of community-led rural tourism. The facility, operated by a local tribal family, offers clean and spacious accommodations at reasonable rates, attracting guests particularly on weekends. The homestay initiative receives training and ongoing support from a state-hired agency, ensuring quality service as more families in the region pursue this livelihood opportunity. Understanding sustainable practices through tourism was a key interaction for the Secretary during this visit.
Later, the group visited the Center of Competence for Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) in Indore, where they reviewed the available screening, counseling, and treatment support aimed at combating this pervasive health issue among the tribal population.
Forward Momentum in Tribal Welfare
The day culminated in a comprehensive review meeting led by the Secretary at the Divisional Commissioner’s office in Indore. Here, she assessed the implementation of MoTA schemes across Madhya Pradesh and particularly the Indore division. The meeting saw participation from representatives of various relevant departments and district collectors, who joined via video conferencing. The Secretary urged all collectors to expedite the implementation of MoTA projects, stressing that timely convergence actions are crucial to ensure that the intended benefits reach every eligible tribal household.
This field visit reinforced the Ministry of Tribal Affairs’ commitment to enhancing the delivery of welfare schemes, improving institutional infrastructures like Adi Sewa Kendras, and supporting sustainable livelihoods through education, skill development, and tourism.
