Empowering MSMEs: Seminar Bridges Local and Global Markets
The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), in collaboration with the Entrepreneurship cell of IIT Madras, hosted a transformative seminar on August 18 at IIT Madras, Chennai. Titled “From Local to Global: Enabling Export-Ready MSMEs through Digital Commerce,” the event gathered a diverse group of participants, including entrepreneurs, policymakers, students, and digital commerce experts.
The seminar aimed to explore practical strategies for assisting MSMEs in tapping into both national and international markets. In his inaugural address, Shri Praveen Yadav, Additional Chief Secretary of the MSME Department in Tamil Nadu, highlighted the significance of digital commerce in breaking down geographical barriers for MSMEs. He called for enhanced collaboration between the central and state governments to create a supportive ecosystem that bolsters the global competitiveness of these enterprises.
Prof. Manu Santhanam, Dean of IC&SR at IIT Madras, also addressed the audience, stressing the essential role of innovation and academia-industry partnerships in helping MSMEs develop new products and technologies to boost their competitiveness. Following these remarks, Shri Hansraj Verma, Director General of the Council of State Industrial Development & Investment Corporation of India, underscored the importance of quality in fortifying competitiveness in both domestic and international markets, while emphasizing the necessity of digitalization for MSMEs.
The keynote address by Shri Dhayalan, Director & Head of MSME DFO Chennai, provided additional context, as he welcomed distinguished guests and highlighted the importance of assisting MSMEs in transitioning from domestic to global markets.
The seminar’s focus on the evolving landscape of international trade was reinforced by several technical sessions featuring experts from various domains including DGFT, EXIM Bank, and e-commerce consulting. Participants gained valuable insights into export procedures, trade finance, and digital onboarding, among other topics designed to enhance MSMEs’ market access.
This event aligns with the government’s ongoing initiatives to strengthen MSME market access through the Procurement & Marketing Support (PMS) Scheme. National Workshops and Seminars, as part of this scheme, serve to educate MSMEs about packaging, export procedures, e-commerce platforms, and more, facilitating their growth into global markets.
The seminar also proved to be a vital opportunity for students and aspiring entrepreneurs, offering them a glimpse into the promising world of digital commerce and international trade.
The session concluded with expressions of gratitude towards the esteemed guests, speakers, and participating organizations that contributed to the event’s success, showcasing the collective effort in realizing the vision of transitioning Indian enterprises from local to global.
