Government Expands Verification Services with New GATCs Initiative
The Department of Consumer Affairs has launched an initiative to bolster the verification ecosystem in India by inviting applications for Government Approved Test Centres (GATCs). Eligible industries, laboratories, and educational institutions can apply to become recognized testing facilities under the Legal Metrology rules. With the application window open until August 31, 2026, the digital portal aims to simplify the application process, making compliance easier for businesses while enhancing consumer protection.
Enhancing Verification Capacity
Currently, 51 GATCs have received official recognition as part of a drive to expand verification services across India. This initiative allows private sector institutions to contribute to the verification and re-verification of weights and measures utilized in various sectors, such as healthcare and transportation. By increasing the number of approved centres, businesses can enjoy faster access to verification services, which is crucial for compliance with regulatory requirements.
Broader Scope of Weights and Measures
In a recent amendment to the GATC Rules, the recognized centres can now verify a comprehensive range of 23 categories of weights and measures. These include vital instruments like water meters, clinical thermometers, vehicle speed meters, and various fuel dispensers—such as petrol, diesel, and LPG. This expansion represents a commitment to improving the accuracy and transparency of measurements in trade and commerce, which is essential for consumer confidence.
A Seamless Application Process for Industries
The digital transformation accompanying the GATC expansion simplifies the process for industries. Applicants can submit forms online, pay fees digitally, and track their application status—all without the need for repeated visits to government offices. This ease of access is a significant step toward enhancing the overall business environment in India.
A Collaborative Approach in Legal Metrology
The GATC initiative represents a cooperative strategy between the government and private entities, aiming to improve the availability and reliability of verification services. By involving laboratories and educational institutions, the government ensures that regulatory standards are upheld while also expanding the network of verification facilities available to businesses and consumers alike.
Improved Consumer Confidence and Faster Regulatory Compliance
The enhanced verification services provided by the expanded GATC network are focused on ensuring that measurements remain accurate in commercial transactions. This initiative not only simplifies compliance processes for businesses but also reinforces consumer trust in measurement accuracy. The Department’s reforms are aligned with broader goals of promoting digital governance and strengthening quality infrastructure in India.
Eligible organisations interested in becoming GATCs can apply online at emaap.gov.in/gatc. The deadline for submissions is set for August 31, 2026, at 5:00 PM.
