Overseas Remittances Under Scrutiny: Addressing Concerns

The Income Tax Department has uncovered a significant overseas remittance network involving 6,422 new entities that collectively transferred Rs 1.29 lakh crore abroad. This investigation has already led to action against 394 firms, with more companies and individuals now under scrutiny. The probe coincides with ongoing pressure on the Indian rupee, prompting the Reserve Bank of India to sell dollars in the foreign exchange market to stabilize the currency.

Findings of the Investigation

Investigators discovered that a large portion of the remittances was directed to a select group of overseas destinations. Singapore, the UAE, Hong Kong, Mauritius, and China received 72.3% of the total remittances. Singapore emerged as the largest recipient, with Rs 41,885 crore transferred there, followed by the UAE at Rs 18,331 crore and Hong Kong at Rs 18,064 crore. A senior official described the operation as massive, indicating that the full extent of the modus operandi may take time to reveal.

The investigation also highlighted a concentration of remittances among entities using foreign addresses. Eighty-three such entities accounted for Rs 36,175 crore of the total transfers. This has prompted investigators to closely examine their ownership structures, business operations, and the transactions involved. The sharp rise in overseas remittances has raised alarms, with Rs 43,048 crore sent abroad in the first half of FY26, already 78% of the total remitted during FY25.

Authorities are investigating the origins of the funds, the nature of the transactions, and the beneficiaries receiving the money overseas. The Income Tax Department confirmed that action has been taken against 394 firms, but the investigation is ongoing, with additional searches and enforcement measures anticipated as it progresses.
