Duty-Free Tech: What You Can Bring Home
India has announced significant updates to its duty-free baggage regulations, set to take effect on February 2, 2026. The new rules will allow travelers to bring in a higher value of goods without incurring customs duty and clarify the allowance for carrying laptops. These changes vary depending on the traveler’s status and mode of arrival, aiming to streamline the customs process for both Indian residents and foreign visitors.
Expanded Duty-Free Allowances
Under the revised framework, passengers can now bring used personal items necessary for daily use without paying customs duty, provided these items are not intended for resale. The general duty-free allowance has increased from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 75,000. This new limit applies to Indian residents, visitors of Indian origin, and foreign nationals with a valid visa. The government has emphasized that this allowance is exclusive to those arriving in India by air or sea, and it is applicable to adults aged 18 years and older, as defined by Indian law. Passengers must carry the goods on their person or in bona fide accompanied baggage to qualify for duty-free clearance. Additionally, foreign tourists arriving by air or sea can now benefit from a higher allowance of Rs. 25,000, an increase from the previous Rs. 15,000, although this benefit does not extend to infants.
Specific Rules for Land Arrivals and Laptops
Travelers entering India through land borders will face stricter regulations. They are permitted to bring only used personal items necessary for daily life without incurring duty, and no monetary allowance applies to other goods. Similar to air and sea arrivals, these items must also be carried on the person or in accompanied baggage. A notable update in the new rules is the allowance for passengers to bring one new laptop duty-free. This provision applies to travelers aged 18 years and older, excluding crew members, and the laptop must be included in bona fide baggage.
Customs Checks and Compliance
Customs authorities have made it clear that duty-free allowances cannot be combined or shared between passengers, even among family members. This measure aims to prevent misuse of the duty-free provisions. Officials have stated that the revised rules will enhance risk-based checks, ensuring that genuine travelers experience fewer complications during routine customs screenings. The updates reflect a commitment to balancing the facilitation of travel with the need for effective customs enforcement.
