Delhi High Court Asks Salman Khan to Respond to Amit Jani’s Plea in Kala Hiran Case

The Delhi High Court is currently addressing a legal dispute involving Bollywood superstar Salman Khan and filmmaker Amit Jani. The case revolves around Jani’s request for a stay on proceedings related to Khan’s civil suit concerning the film “Kala Hiran: The Battle for Legacy.” The hearing took place before Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani, who is now awaiting a formal response from Khan.

Legal Proceedings and Claims

During the hearing, Jani’s legal team argued that Khan’s current suit overlaps significantly with an earlier case already pending in the High Court. They contended that Khan has initiated parallel litigation on the same subject matter, and therefore, the proceedings for the new suit should be paused until the earlier case is resolved. Senior Advocate Ravi Prakash, representing Salman Khan, agreed to submit a formal counter-affidavit in response to Jani’s application.

Prakash explained that Khan initially sought protection for his personality and publicity rights, which led to interim protection being granted to him in December 2025. Following this order, Khan’s team claimed that promotional materials and media interviews released by the filmmakers drew direct parallels to the actor’s life, particularly referencing the infamous 1998 blackbuck poaching case in Rajasthan. They argued that this portrayal could cause significant reputational harm to Khan.

Court’s Intervention and Filmmaker’s Position

Khan subsequently requested the court’s intervention to prevent the circulation of promotional materials related to the film and to restrain its release. The situation escalated in July 2026 when the Delhi High Court ordered the removal of the film’s initial digital teaser and certain promotional posts from social media. The court also instructed the filmmakers not to use Khan’s name, likeness, or identifiable characteristics without his consent.

As the proceedings progressed, the court began to examine the film’s distribution and release plans. Jani’s team asserted that “Kala Hiran: The Battle for Legacy” was neither complete nor had it been submitted to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for theatrical certification. They also noted that an official trailer for the film had not yet been released.

Future Hearings and Ongoing Dispute

The possibility of a direct-to-digital release was also discussed during the hearings. While the court considered the film’s theatrical status and certification, it also took into account Khan’s concerns about the potential dissemination of the film or related promotional materials through digital platforms, including OTT releases.

Amit Jani’s side has consistently opposed the reliefs sought by Salman Khan, maintaining their stance against the actor’s requests for injunctions. The latest hearing focused on the procedural objections raised by Jani regarding the overlap between the current proceedings and the earlier case pending before the High Court. Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani has directed Khan’s counsel to submit a detailed response, with the matter scheduled for a comprehensive hearing on December 16, 2026. The court has yet to adjudicate the substantive issues raised in the latest application.
