Compassion in Law: Insights from the 2nd N.R. Madhava Menon Lecture
In an inspiring evening at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, the 2nd Prof (Dr.) N. R. Madhava Menon Memorial Lecture was held in collaboration with the Commonwealth Legal Education Association. The event focused on the theme of ‘Judging with Compassion: Human Understanding in the Practice of Law,’ emphasizing the essential role of empathy and sensitivity in judicial proceedings.
The ceremony was inaugurated by Hon’ble Justice Surya Kant, Chief Justice of India, who welcomed esteemed guests from the judiciary, legal academia, and practicing legal professionals. The goal of the lecture was to ignite thoughtful discussion on the human aspects of the law and the need for compassion in justice administration.
Delivering the Memorial Lecture, Hon’ble Justice Vikram Nath of the Supreme Court of India and Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority, stressed the importance of integrating humanity into legal frameworks. He reiterated that compassion must align with legal principles, fairness, and constitutional values, vital for a just society.
The event also featured a significant reflection by Dr. R. Venkataramani, the Attorney General for India, who spoke on the life and vision of Prof. (Dr.) N. R. Madhava Menon. His contributions have profoundly influenced legal education and practice in India.
Prof. (Dr.) S. Sivakumar, President of the CLEA and Senior Professor at the Indian Law Institute, further contributed to the discussion, bringing insights on the role of legal education in nurturing future generations of legal professionals.
During the event, Chief Justice Surya Kant released two important legal publications authored by Prof. (Dr.) S. Sivakumar, titled ‘Indian Personal Law: Unity and Diversity’ and ‘Economics and Law in Context.’ The books, co-authored by Sougata Talukdar, include forewords by prominent Supreme Court judges and highlight critical intersections of law and society.
The lecture not only honored the legacy of Prof. (Dr.) N. R. Madhava Menon, a trailblazer in legal education, but also aimed to encourage a culture of dialogue among legal stakeholders, promoting the advancement of legal understanding and education.
Col. Akash Patil, Director of the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, opened the proceedings with a warm welcome, emphasizing the significance of fostering intellectual engagement on pressing legal and social issues. The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Dr. Ruchi Sharma D., Joint General Secretary of the CLEA, reflecting the shared commitment to creating a more compassionate and understanding legal system.
