India Hosts Curtain Raiser for ESTIC 2026 on Ocean Sciences
The Centre for Marine Living Resources and Ecology (CMLRE), a branch of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), recently hosted the curtain raiser for the Emerging Science, Technology, and Innovation Conclave (ESTIC) 2026 in Kochi. This event, themed ‘Ocean Sciences & Maritime Technologies,’ coincided with a stakeholder engagement workshop for the Indian Ocean Biodiversity Information System (IndOBIS) portal, which is pivotal for enhancing biodiversity research under the nation’s Deep Ocean Mission. The live-streamed event gathered a diverse audience of scientists, researchers, students, and data managers, aiming to bolster marine research and data-sharing within the community.
The significance of this curtain raiser follows the official launch of ESTIC 2026 by Union Minister of State for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr. Jitendra Singh, at the National Media Centre in New Delhi. In a video message, Dr. Srinivasa Kumar Tummala, Secretary of MoES, emphasized the ministry’s commitment to realizing the Prime Minister’s vision of utilizing ocean resources as a key driver for economic growth and advancing towards the vision of a developed India by 2047.
During the event, the launch of the ESTIC ‘Ocean Science & Maritime Technology’ video and information brochure was also announced. The audience received insights into the upcoming programs scheduled from October 27 to 29, 2026, at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. Notable highlights include a keynote address by Dr. Kilaparti Ramakrishna from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, expert talks by distinguished scientists, and a panel discussion led by former MoES Secretary Dr. M. Ravichandran.
This year’s ESTIC aims to further enhance collaboration and devise strategies to improve India’s scientific and technological capabilities, aligning with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. Dr. Tummala noted the remarkable success of the previous ESTIC in 2025 and indicated that the upcoming event will be larger, more grandiose, and impactful. It is expected to attract participation from various scientific institutions, government departments, startups, and innovators across the nation, showcasing the breadth of India’s scientific talent and innovation.
