Election Commission Responds to MP Delegation Request

In a significant turn of events today, a group of Members of Parliament, led by the Honourable Leader of the Opposition, Shri Rahul Gandhi, sought to meet with the Election Commission of India to submit a memorandum. However, prior to 4:00 PM, no official requests had been made by any political party to schedule such a meeting, as clarified by the Election Commission.

According to the sources, it wasn’t until late afternoon that the Delhi Police informed the Election Commission about the MPs’ intention to meet. The proposed gathering included a large delegation of 240 MPs at the Parliament House Annexe, which raised concerns regarding protocol adherence.

Protocol and Meeting Procedures

The Election Commission of India has established specific procedures for meetings with political parties, communicated to all parties involved. These guidelines require political parties to request appointments through their authorized representatives. Meetings are typically scheduled at times agreed upon by both the Election Commission and the political parties, emphasizing the need for proper protocols in democratic processes.

ECI’s Response to Meeting Request

Upon receiving the request to convene at an unusual venue, the Election Commission deemed this proposal incompatible with its established norms. The Commission emphasized that such meetings are conventionally held at their premises to ensure compliance with their protocols. As a compromise, the Election Commission offered to send a senior officer to the Parliament House Annexe to accept the memorandum, a proposal that was ultimately declined by the MPs.

Commitment to Democratic Practices

The Election Commission expressed its respect for parliamentary and democratic processes, reaffirming its commitment to upholding procedures and conventions essential to its operations. Any political party can request a meeting with the Commission at any time, and typically, the Commission accommodates these requests based on time availability and scheduling.

As this situation continues to develop, it remains clear that the Election Commission of India is dedicated to maintaining its protocols while fostering communication with political parties in a democratic manner, adhering to established conventions.
