Cricket Coach Attacked with Bat After Controversial Team Selection, Requires 20 Stitches
The Cricket Association of Pondicherry (CAP) is embroiled in a serious controversy following an alleged assault on its Under-19 head coach, S Venkataraman. The incident occurred at the association’s training facility when three local cricketers, reportedly upset over their exclusion from the squad for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, attacked Venkataraman. He sustained significant injuries, including a head wound requiring 20 stitches and a shoulder fracture, leading to a police report being filed.
The attack took place around 11 am at CAP’s indoor nets, where Venkataraman was preparing for training. According to reports, he was assaulted by Karthikeyan Jayasundaram, A Aravinddaraj, and S Santhosh Kumaran, who are all local cricketers. Venkataraman, a former secretary of the association, detailed in his complaint that while Aravinddaraj restrained him, Karthikeyan used a bat to strike him, allegedly under the instruction of G Chandran, the secretary of the Bharathidasan Pondicherry Cricketers’ Forum. Venkataraman claimed that the attackers were told they would only receive opportunities if they harmed him. The police have confirmed that the players involved are currently absconding, and efforts are underway to locate them.
Injuries and Medical Response
Following the assault, Venkataraman was rushed to a local hospital where he received immediate medical attention. Reports indicate that he suffered a severe head injury, necessitating 20 stitches on his forehead, along with a fracture in his shoulder. Fortunately, medical personnel have reported that he is in stable condition. Sub-Inspector S Rajesh, who is overseeing the investigation, emphasized the seriousness of the incident and the need for accountability among the accused players.
Reactions and Allegations
The Bharathidasan Pondicherry Cricketers’ Forum has denied any involvement in the attack, with its president, Senthil Kumaran, asserting that Venkataraman has a history of conflicts with local players. This incident follows a recent investigation by the Indian Express, which uncovered allegations of favoritism within the CAP, suggesting that local players were being overlooked in favor of outstation cricketers. The report highlighted that only five Puducherry-born players have participated in Ranji Trophy matches since 2021. In response to these findings, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia acknowledged the serious issues raised and indicated that they would be thoroughly examined.
CAP’s Stance and Future Implications
While the Cricket Association of Pondicherry has refrained from commenting on the assault, its CEO, Raju Metha, defended the organization’s governance, asserting a commitment to zero tolerance for corruption. The unfolding situation raises significant concerns about player treatment and the integrity of the selection process within the association. As investigations continue, the implications of this incident could have lasting effects on the local cricketing community and its governance.
