Odisha’s New Coastal Highway to Enhance Connectivity and Tourism

Odisha is on the brink of a significant transformation with the announcement of the Rameshwar–Paradeep Coastal Highway. Spanning 160.18 km, this vital corridor is set to enhance transportation across the state’s coastal regions. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH), the project carries a hefty investment of ₹8,300.79 crore and will traverse through Khurda, Puri, Kendrapada, and Jagatsinghpur districts, linking critical cultural, religious, tourism, and economic locations.

The highway aims to revolutionize travel experiences by offering a safer, faster, and smoother journey. The route will feature a four-lane access-controlled highway stretching from Rameshwar to Konark and a two-lane highway with paved shoulders from Konark to Paradeep, designed for speeds of up to 100 km/hour. Once operational, the highway is expected to cut travel time between Rameshwar and Paradeep by approximately two and a half hours, facilitating better movement for both passengers and freight.

Connecting Odisha’s Spiritual Heritage

This new coastal highway stands to substantially benefit religious and cultural tourism in Odisha. By providing quicker access to iconic spiritual sites, it will enhance pilgrimage journeys for millions of devotees. Key destinations along the route include the iconic Jagannath Temple in Puri, the historic Sun Temple at Konark, and the revered Ramchandi Temple.

With enhanced infrastructure, the pilgrimage experience will be improved significantly, ensuring safer and more comfortable transport for both tourists and devotees. Furthermore, the development of an airport in the area will bolster Odisha’s status as a spiritual tourism hub, making the state more accessible to visitors from all over India and beyond.

Odisha’s New Tourism Highway

The Rameshwar–Paradeep corridor is likely to become a coastal tourism gateway, linking stunning beaches, historical sites, and unique biodiversity along Odisha’s eastern seaboard. By improving access to Puri, Konark, and Paradeep, these popular destinations will form a cohesive tourism circuit. This circuit will offer visitors a comprehensive coastal experience encompassing spiritual heritage, ancient architecture, nature preserves, and beautiful landscapes.

The strategic highway will also stimulate opportunities for beach tourism, eco-tourism, and nature-focused travel, making it easier for visitors to access important ecological spots like the Gahirmatha turtle nesting sites. Enhanced connectivity is expected to foster sustainable tourism practices, increasing awareness of Odisha’s coastal biodiversity and the need for conservation.

Boost to Local Economy and Coastal Development

The new highway is set to empower local communities by promoting the development of hotels, homestays, restaurants, handicraft markets, and tourism-related businesses along the route. In keeping with the PM GatiShakti principles, the project will interlink nine economic nodes and five logistics nodes, which will enhance Odisha’s economic fabric. It will also improve access to critical hubs, such as Paradeep Port, Puri Railway Station, Puri Airport, and other key economic centers.
