Oil Prices Surge 3% Amid Escalating US-Iran Tensions, Brent Crude Exceeds $90 per Barrel
Oil prices surged on Monday as tensions between the United States and Iran escalated, raising concerns about crude supply disruptions from the Middle East. Brent crude rose 2.30% to $90.13 a barrel, while US benchmark WTI crude increased by 2.07% to $84.20. This uptick follows a significant rally last week, where Brent experienced its largest weekly gain since April, climbing 15.9%, and WTI rose 15.5%, marking its strongest weekly advance since early March.
Conflict Escalates in the Region
The recent price increases come amid ongoing US military operations against Iran, which have continued for nine consecutive nights. Iran has retaliated with missile and drone strikes in the region, affecting countries like Bahrain and Kuwait. The heightened hostilities have disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route responsible for approximately one-fifth of global oil trade. The US has implemented a naval blockade on Iranian ports, while Iran claims it is targeting vessels that breach its navigation rules in the strait.
Shipping activity has already slowed significantly. Data from LSEG indicates that only four vessels passed through the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, down from eight the previous day. Since Friday, just three oil product tankers and one Very Large Crude Carrier have entered the strait to load crude. Compounding these issues, a vessel reportedly caught fire near Oman’s coastline, with the cause of the blaze still unknown. The British military confirmed the incident in the Strait of Hormuz.
Military Actions and Regional Responses
The US military has advised commercial vessels to navigate closer to Oman while transiting the strait. However, Iran has responded by attacking ships using that route, asserting its control over navigation in the area. Barclays analyst Amarpreet Singh noted that the upcoming days and weeks will clarify the sustainable level of oil exports from the region amid renewed blockades. He cautioned that oil markets may be underestimating the potential impact on inventories, which are currently at their tightest levels in five years.
The military conflict has also intensified, with the US confirming the death of another service member in Iraq during a controlled detonation of a downed Iranian drone. The military reported that 17 US service members have died since the conflict began. US Central Command stated that strikes would continue to degrade Iranian military capabilities that threaten commercial vessels and civilian mariners in the Strait of Hormuz. In response, Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait have activated their air defenses against incoming threats, while Israel has warned of potential missile spillover into its territory.
