Strategic Experts Affirm Strong India-UK Relations Under New Prime Minister Andy Burnham
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham is set to lead the UK following his unopposed election as Labour Party leader. His ascension coincides with the implementation of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between India and the UK. Strategic experts predict that the partnership between the two nations will remain robust under Burnham’s leadership, despite his plans for a different domestic agenda.
Strong Ties with India
Vishakha Yaduvanshi, the Consul General of India in Manchester, emphasized Burnham’s consistent support for strengthening ties between India and northern England. She noted that his engagement with Greater Manchester authorities has significantly enhanced India-North England relations. Burnham’s previous visit to India and his participation in key events, such as the India-North England Opportunity Summit, reflect his commitment to fostering bilateral relations.
Burnham has identified India as a crucial partner in Greater Manchester’s international strategy. He has highlighted various sectors for collaboration, including digital technology, engineering, healthcare, and cultural exchange. Rajesh Agrawal, chair of Labour Friends of India, praised Burnham for his efforts to build strong connections with India through business and education. He pointed out Burnham’s focus on long-term relationships, which has led to improved connectivity, including a direct flight between India and Manchester. Agrawal also noted that Burnham’s push for devolving powers to regional governments could open new avenues for cooperation with Indian states.
The 1928 Institute, a British Indian think tank, suggested that Burnham should consider establishing an India Task Force or appointing an India Trade Envoy to sustain the momentum of the bilateral relationship. Dr. Nikita Ved, chair of the institute, acknowledged the strong foundation Burnham inherits but cautioned that his domestic agenda may divert his attention.
Future Trade Prospects
Lord Karan Bilimoria, founder of Cobra Beer, expressed optimism about Burnham’s commitment to prioritizing India. He called for a doubling of trade between the two nations, aiming to increase it from nearly £50 billion to £100 billion by 2030. Bilimoria believes that the next phase of India-UK relations will focus on transforming the trade agreement into tangible investments, job creation, and opportunities for smaller businesses.
