Bihar’s Highways Get a Boost to Support Local Farmers
Before sunrise in Bihar, trucks filled with ripe bananas and sacks of makhana set out from local farms, embarking on their journey to market. However, persistent traffic jams and seasonal disruptions have plagued this process, particularly for perishable goods like bananas, where time is critical. In response to these ongoing challenges, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has received the green light from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs to upgrade the Khagaria–Purnea section of NH-31 and NH-231 into a four-lane highway.
Enhancing Agricultural Livelihoods
This significant project, costing Rs. 3,936.05 crore, represents more than just a transport upgrade; it is an investment in the livelihoods of farmers in Bihar’s agricultural heartland. With efficient transport, farmers can minimize spoilage, preserve product quality, and improve their market returns. The upgraded highway will facilitate the swift transport of essential crops, bolstering the region’s economy.
Flood-Resistant Infrastructure for Lasting Impact
Eastern Bihar’s transport network has long struggled with vulnerabilities to flooding, especially in areas nearby the Kosi and Ganga river systems. Such seasonal floods disrupt connectivity, delaying the transport of goods and adding uncertainty for local residents. The four-laning of the Khagaria–Purnea section seeks to implement robust engineering interventions, making the highway more resilient against floods through improved road geometry, enhanced pavement strength, and modern drainage systems.
Bridging Gaps in the Seemanchal Region
The Seemanchal region has faced significant developmental hurdles due to limited accessibility. Districts such as Khagaria and Katihar often have longer travel times to vital administrative and economic centers compared to other areas. The planned upgrades to the corridor promise to reduce travel times from a current average of 3.5 to 4 hours to approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, greatly enhancing regional mobility.
Strengthening Regional Connections
The importance of the Khagaria–Purnea corridor extends beyond Bihar, as it will fortify interstate links across eastern India. This upgraded highway will improve road connections between Bihar and West Bengal, while also enhancing access to Jharkhand through the broader National Highway network.
Alleviating Traffic Congestion
The Khagaria-Purnea project addresses long-standing bottlenecks in the region driven by inadequate road features and heavy congestion in urban areas like Khagaria, Bhagalpur, Katihar, and Purnia. By expanding from a critical two-lane highway to four lanes, this project will provide needed relief from traffic, facilitating better connectivity across Bihar’s Seemanchal region and linking it with Patna, West Bengal, and Jharkhand.
Connecting Key Economic Hubs
The upgraded corridor will link several of Bihar’s important economic and logistics centers. It is set to connect five PM Gati Shakti Economic Nodes, including a textile cluster, two mega food parks, and two fishing and seafood parks. Furthermore, it will integrate with 11 logistics nodes that encompass four major railway stations, one airport, and connections to multiple highways. This comprehensive approach will significantly improve multimodal transportation and logistics across the region.
