Ashoke Pandit Labels Naseeruddin Shah a “Compulsive Abuser” Following “Dimagi Naxal” Comment

Filmmaker and producer Ashoke Pandit has taken aim at veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah over his recent comments supporting the protesting students of Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia. Shah’s remarks included the controversial label “Dimagi Naxal,” which he embraced while advocating for the restoration of the student union. Pandit accused Shah of using abusive language and suggested that his public statements stem from frustration.

Naseeruddin Shah’s Support for Jamia Students

In a video shared on Facebook, Naseeruddin Shah expressed his solidarity with the Jamia students, who are demanding the revival of their student union. Wearing a badge that read “Dimagi Naxal,” Shah stated, “I proudly identify with the label.” He also criticized the government’s approach to student protests, challenging the use of terms like “anti-national” and “tukde tukde gang” to describe dissenters.

Ashoke Pandit responded to Shah’s comments, stating that he was neither shocked nor surprised by the actor’s choice of words. He claimed that Shah’s behavior has become increasingly aggressive over the past year. “I’m not shocked, nor I’m surprised with Naseeruddin Shah’s abusive language because, since last few months, in a year in fact, he’s been constantly misbehaving, has become a compulsive abuser,” Pandit remarked. He noted that Shah’s expressions of frustration were evident in his public appearances.

Ashoke Pandit’s Critique of Shah’s Behavior

Pandit elaborated on his concerns regarding Shah’s public demeanor, suggesting that the actor’s frustration is becoming more apparent. “When I see him totally distorted, totally frustrated on camera, and he’s trying to vent out his frustration. The more he vents out his frustration, he’s getting exposed day by day, every day,” he added. Pandit believes that Shah’s comments are damaging to his public image.

The filmmaker also linked Shah’s remarks to ideological differences regarding successful films. He specifically mentioned titles like The Kashmir Files, The Kerala Story, and Dhurandhar, suggesting that Shah’s discomfort stems from the commercial success of these films. “Probably one of the reasons why he’s feeling insecure is that the films which are doing well in the country is not suiting him,” Pandit stated. He further suggested that Shah might benefit from professional help, saying, “A normal person will not behave like this.”

Pandit’s comments come as reactions to Shah’s video continue to circulate. The veteran actor has also voiced support for students protesting at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, making his recent statements part of a broader discourse on student activism.
