Indian Navy Concludes Successful Port Call in Sri Lanka

The First Training Squadron (1TS) of the Indian Navy, comprising INS Tir, INS Sujata, and ICGS Sarathi, has successfully wrapped up its port call in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on October 29, 2026. This visit served to strengthen the defense ties and maritime partnership between India and Sri Lanka through a series of collaborative engagements.

Strengthening Maritime Cooperation

During the visit, the Senior Officer of 1TS and the Commanding Officers of the ships met with the Commander of the Western Naval Area of the Sri Lanka Navy. This interaction emphasized the significance of the close bilateral relations and both nations’ commitment to enhancing maritime cooperation.

Professional Engagements and Training Exchanges

As part of their professional development, sea trainees from 1TS visited the Naval and Maritime Academy (NMA) in Trincomalee, engaging with their Sri Lankan peers. In a reciprocal arrangement, Sri Lankan naval cadets toured the ships of 1TS, observing their training facilities and activities. These exchanges fostered camaraderie and allowed for the sharing of valuable experiences between the two navies’ trainees.

Community Outreach Initiatives

In conjunction with their formal engagements, Indian Navy personnel participated in a community beach clean-up, promoting environmental sustainability in the region. Furthermore, the ships welcomed visitors from the local community and the Indian diaspora, providing them with a unique opportunity to meet the crew and learn more about the Indian Navy’s training and operational missions.

Conducting a Passage Exercise

Upon departing from Colombo, the ships engaged in a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with the Sri Lanka Navy Ship (SLNS) Nandimithra. This exercise involved coordinated maritime maneuvers, enhancing operational coordination and interoperability between the two naval forces.

Enhancing Regional Partnerships

This port call highlighted the enduring maritime partnership between India and Sri Lanka. It reaffirmed their joint dedication to regional maritime cooperation and capacity building, aligning with the vision of MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions).
