India to Host Global Agricultural Innovation Week in 2027
New Delhi is set to become a hub for agricultural innovation as the CGIAR Science and Partnership Week will be held there from April 12 to 17, 2027. This significant event, organized by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and CGIAR, aims to unite researchers, farmers, governments, startups, and businesses from across the globe to discuss agricultural advancements and strategies for reaching more farmers with vital innovations.
Strengthening International Collaborations
India is a natural host for this initiative, boasting one of the world’s largest national agricultural research systems led by ICAR. With over 50 years of collaboration with CGIAR, India has advanced considerably in various agricultural sectors, including crops, water management, livestock, and nutrition. Ten CGIAR research centers currently operate within India, enhancing its productivity and sustainability in agriculture.
Sharing Agricultural Innovations
ICAR’s efforts have extended far beyond its borders, impacting agricultural practices in several African countries. For instance, a groundnut sample conserved by ICRISAT has facilitated better crop varieties in Malawi, Uganda, Mozambique, and Zambia. The Center of Excellence for South–South Cooperation in Agriculture in Hyderabad actively shares successful farming innovations across Asia, Africa, and Latin America, showcasing India’s leading role in global agricultural science.
A Legacy of Partnership
Dr. M. L. Jat, Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) and Director General of ICAR, emphasized the importance of the partnership between India and CGIAR. This collaboration has driven substantial advancements in agricultural research and development, transitioning India from a food-deficit nation to a key player in food production and exportation.
Future-focused Discussions
Dr. Jat expressed that the upcoming CGIAR Science and Partnership Week will serve as a crucial platform for fostering international cooperation. The event will focus on topics such as climate resilience, water management, soil health, and the active roles of youth and women in agriculture. It will also assess how media can aid in communicating agricultural innovations.
Celebrating Achievements and Forward Thinking
Dr. Ismahane Elouafi, Executive Managing Director of CGIAR, noted that the event will celebrate the historical partnership while laying a roadmap for future agricultural cooperation. Highlighting India’s ability to leverage strong national science, she mentioned that knowledge and seed varieties developed in India are already supporting farmers in Africa and Asia. The event aims to deepen this exchange and enhance international collaboration in agricultural science.
Showcasing India’s Agricultural Journey
Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Director General of ICRISAT, described India’s agricultural transformation, attributing it to the power of science and international partnerships. Through the CGIAR Science and Partnership Week 2027, India seeks to showcase its agricultural successes and explore opportunities for mutual learning to tackle emerging agricultural challenges worldwide.
The first edition of this scientific endeavor took place in Nairobi, Kenya, in April 2025. The New Delhi event will pivot towards translating scientific developments into practical impacts, with the program and more details on speakers to be announced in the coming months.
