India’s Fisheries Sector Transforms into a Tech-Driven Economy
India’s fisheries sector is undergoing a remarkable transformation, evolving from a traditional production-focused industry to a modern, technology-driven component of the national economy. This shift is pivotal not only for food and nutritional security but also for job creation, rural livelihoods, and boosting export revenues.
Significant advancements in this sector include the implementation of value addition, the development of cold-chain systems, modern processing methods, and innovative mobile marketing strategies. Enterprises are now leveraging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things, blockchain, drone technology, and precision aquaculture to enhance the traceability and quality of products while maximizing productivity. These interventions collectively aim to reduce losses, increase profitability, and fortify the fisheries value chain.
Value Addition: A Game Changer for Fisheries
Value addition has become a crucial factor in transforming the fisheries sector into a diversified, market-oriented enterprise. By processing, packaging, and branding fish products for consumer convenience—whether ready-to-cook or ready-to-eat—producers can secure better prices that align with evolving consumer preferences. This approach not only minimizes post-harvest losses but also extends shelf life and raises quality standards across the supply chain.
This transition offers new employment opportunities and encourages entrepreneurship, particularly benefiting fishers, fish farmers, women’s groups, youths, cooperatives, and small businesses involved in various aspects of the fish market. By strengthening market linkages and bolstering incomes, the industry is positioning itself to compete in the growing demand for safe, high-quality seafood.
Government Investment Fuels Growth
The Indian government has bolstered this enhancement in fisheries through significant public investments, committing approximately Rs. 39,272 crore since 2015 via initiatives like the Blue Revolution Scheme and the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). These funds are earmarked for infrastructure expansion, production improvements, and creating job opportunities for over 74.66 lakh fishers and farmers.
Enhancing transportation and logistics networks is equally critical, with 46,500 facilities established, including fish transportation systems and cold storage units, supported by an investment of Rs. 3,393.85 crore. Five smart fish markets are also under development, incorporating advanced technologies and expected to create 15,900 new jobs.
Sustainability and Quality Raw Material
As India aims to ramp up value addition in premium fish products, securing a consistent supply of high-quality raw materials is paramount. The Department has initiated genetic improvement programs focused on developing fast-growing and disease-resistant fish varieties. This effort is expected to bolster the availability of high-value species like trout, shrimp, and catla, benefiting both domestic consumption and export markets.
Empowering Small Producers and Women
For the benefits of value addition to reach small producers, institutional models that facilitate production aggregation and market access are vital. The formation of 2,195 Fisheries Farmer Producer Organizations (FFPOs) has helped small-scale fishers and farmers pool resources and enhance their involvement in modern processing and marketing activities. These organizations are also connected to digital marketplaces through the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), improving their access to fair pricing.
Furthermore, the emphasis on value addition is enhancing women’s roles in the fisheries sector. Under PMMSY, over Rs. 4,155 crore has been allocated for projects aimed at benefiting more than 1.28 lakh women. This funding enables women to engage in various activities, including fish processing and retail, creating sustainable livelihoods while promoting nutritional security.
India’s fisheries sector is thus advancing towards a resilient, technology-enabled economy. By integrating public investments with innovative practices, the sector is set to reduce post-harvest losses, boost seafood exports, raise fisher incomes, and promote women’s participation in the industry, ultimately reshaping the future of Indian fisheries.
