India Fosters Hydrogen Future on World Hydrogen Day

In celebration of World Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) hosted a significant event at the Atal Akshay Urja Bhawan in New Delhi. This gathering attracted over 100 participants, including government officials, industry representatives, researchers, and experts who engaged in vital discussions on the standards and safety measures necessary for the effective utilization of hydrogen in India.

Panel Discussions on Standards and Safety

The event featured two insightful panel discussions centered around hydrogen standards and safety protocols at hydrogen facilities. Esteemed representatives from the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), and other notable organizations contributed to the dialogue. This collaborative effort aimed to explore the shared experiences and emphasize the importance of establishing clear safety standards to enable the broader adoption of hydrogen technology in the country.

Expert Insights and Future Directions

The discussions brought to light the necessity for well-defined standards governing the production, storage, transportation, and use of hydrogen. Experts stressed the importance of improved testing and training for personnel working with hydrogen, alongside enhanced coordination between government agencies, industries, and subject matter experts.

Adding to the gravitas of the event, the valedictory session was led by Chief Guest Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India. The session included meaningful addresses by Shri Akash Tripathi, Managing Director of the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), and Shri Mohammad Rihan, Director General of the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE). Shri Abhay Bakre, Mission Director of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, MNRE, initiated the proceedings, while Shri Sujit Pillai, Scientist F at MNRE, delivered the vote of thanks.

Release of Key Report on Hydrogen Standards

During the event, a pivotal report titled “India’s Hydrogen Standards: Gap Assessment and Preliminary Action Framework” was unveiled, in collaboration with the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). This report provides a comprehensive analysis of the current hydrogen standards in India, identifies critical gaps, and outlines actionable steps to address these issues.

National Green Hydrogen Mission

The National Green Hydrogen Mission, which received approval in January 2023 with a substantial budget of ₹19,744 crore, seeks to position India as a global leader in the production, usage, and export of green hydrogen and related technologies. The mission aims for a production capacity of 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030 and supports various initiatives, including production, manufacturing of equipment, pilot projects, research, and training programs.
