ICAR-IIAB Hosts Agricultural Workshop for 1,500 Farmers in Jharkhand

The ICAR–Indian Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology (ICAR-IIAB) in Ranchi recently held a significant Pre-Rabi Kisan Goshti-cum-Agricultural Input Distribution Programme. On October 8, 2026, the event welcomed approximately 1,500 farmers from several districts, including Ranchi, Khunti, Gumla, and Ramgarh. The program aimed to foster direct interactions among farmers, scientists, and policymakers, emphasizing the importance of scientific and sustainable agricultural practices.

Union Minister Inaugurates New Facilities

During the event, Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, inaugurated several new facilities at ICAR-IIAB via video conferencing. These included the Admin-cum-School Building, Birsa Munda Multipurpose Hall, and the Jaipal Singh Munda Sports Complex. Additionally, he laid the foundation stone for a new guest house, part of a comprehensive project valuing Rs 119 Crore.

Focus on Scientific Agriculture

In his address, Minister Chouhan urged the importance of adopting scientific agriculture practices tailored for Jharkhand’s unique conditions. He highlighted improved seed varieties, integrated farming systems, and balanced nutrient management as essential tools for enhancing agricultural output. The minister called on scientists to ensure their research benefits reach farmers directly, reinforcing the connection between research institutions and local agricultural needs.

Addressing Agricultural Challenges

Shri Chouhan noted the rich agricultural heritage of Jharkhand while stressing the need for farmers to embrace modern techniques to tackle contemporary challenges. He emphasized the timely availability of quality seeds and the urgency of combating issues such as counterfeit fertilizers and fake seeds.

Insights from Agricultural Leaders

Shri Bhagirath Choudhary, Union Minister of State for Agriculture, reaffirmed the role of farmers in national food security. He highlighted the necessity for farmers to adopt contemporary agricultural technologies and collaborate through Farmer Producer Organisations. Emphasizing natural farming practices, he urged farmers to diversify their crops and protect themselves from substandard agricultural inputs.

Strengthening Agricultural Research

Dr. M. L. Jat, Secretary of DARE and Director General of ICAR, spoke of the agricultural potential in eastern India, specifically Jharkhand. He advocated for the improvement of agricultural research and called for strategies that promote rice-fallow intensification and address significant agricultural challenges, such as acidic soils.

Engaging with Farmers

During the program, Dr. D. K. Yadav, Deputy Director General of ICAR, emphasized the need to align agricultural research closely with the needs of farmers to ensure technology reaches every corner. The day also featured an exhibition displaying various innovations in farming technology, crop varieties, and livestock management, allowing farmers to glean new insights and practices.

Distribution of Agricultural Inputs

The Kisan Goshti offered farmers practical guidance on diverse topics, from integrated pest management to organic farming. Attendees received valuable agricultural inputs, including improved seed varieties and various fertilizers, aimed at enhancing productivity for the upcoming Rabi season.

The event also recognized several former officials for their contributions to ICAR-IIAB, highlighting the ongoing commitment to advancing agricultural research and farmer engagement.
