Nitin Gadkari Announces Development of Flex-Fuel Engines for 100% Ethanol as India Advances Alternative Fuel Initiatives
After the introduction of E20 petrol for vehicles, India is now focusing on the development of flex-fuel engines that can run entirely on ethanol or E100. Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari emphasized the potential of ethanol to enhance farmers’ incomes and reduce the country’s dependence on imported petroleum. He made these remarks during the inauguration of a new public bus service in Madhya Pradesh, alongside Chief Minister Mohan Yadav.
Gadkari highlighted that ethanol production has already benefited farmers, citing a significant increase in maize prices from approximately Rs 1,200 per quintal to Rs 2,600 per quintal. He described farmers as not only food providers but also energy providers, reinforcing the concept of self-reliance.
Flex-Fuel Engines
Gadkari announced that flex-fuel engines capable of operating solely on ethanol are currently under development. He stated that vehicles equipped with this technology would soon be introduced. The minister noted that transitioning to cleaner fuels could help reduce pollution and lessen fuel imports while maintaining safety standards.
India’s petroleum imports currently amount to around Rs 22 lakh crore. Gadkari stressed the necessity of decreasing this reliance through increased utilization of ethanol, electricity, hydrogen, and other alternative energy sources. He also mentioned the government’s push for electric vehicles, including the introduction of electric tractors and ongoing projects for hydrogen-powered vehicles.
Public Transportation Push
On the topic of public transportation, Gadkari explained that the newly launched bus service in Madhya Pradesh aims to provide safer and more affordable transport options, particularly for economically disadvantaged groups. He advocated for better facilities in air-conditioned buses, with ticket prices set to be 30% lower than those of diesel buses.
The minister outlined measures to enhance the safety and quality of public buses, including stricter testing standards before registration. He emphasized the need for buses to be accessible for persons with disabilities and senior citizens. Additionally, Gadkari mentioned the government’s initiative to promote the scrapping of older vehicles and expand vehicle scrapping and testing centers.
Gadkari also pointed out that 32 driving centers have been established in Madhya Pradesh to address the shortage of trained drivers. He discussed the potential for converting waste into fuel, noting that Nagpur currently produces 28 tonnes of CNG daily from waste, with around 4,000 similar projects underway across the country. He stated that these initiatives could provide farmers with additional income while also helping to reduce imports and pollution.
