India Experiences 30% Growth in Michelin Key Hotels in Second Year of Ratings
NEW DELHI: The Michelin Guide has expanded its recognition of hotels in India, increasing the number of properties awarded its prestigious “Keys” from 36 in 2025 to 47 for 2026. This growth represents approximately 10% of the 470 new hotels globally that received one, two, or three stars. The Michelin Guide, which began rating hotels in India last year, aims to enhance the hospitality landscape by encouraging excellence in service and experience.
The Michelin Guide’s latest selection includes 112 Indian hotels, with two properties receiving three Keys, 15 earning two Keys, and 30 awarded one Key. The Taj Falaknuma Palace and Taj Lake Palace are the two hotels that achieved the highest distinction. Notable hotels with two Keys include the Oberoi properties in Agra, Udaipur, and Bandhavgarh, as well as the Leela Palace in Delhi and Jaipur, and Raffles in Jaipur and Udaipur. The iconic Taj Mahal Tower in Mumbai has been awarded one Key.
While Indian chefs have garnered Michelin stars abroad, restaurants in India have yet to receive similar recognition. In response to inquiries about future ratings for Indian restaurants, the Michelin Guide stated it has no current information but will communicate any developments in due course. The evaluation process for hotels involves anonymous visits by full-time inspectors who assess properties based on five universal criteria, ensuring a consistent guest experience.
