INS Sahyadri and INS Kulish Excel at Maritime Security Drill in Philippines
The Indian Navy’s frontline stealth frigate INS Sahyadri and missile corvette INS Kulish have successfully wrapped up their participation in the 23rd ADMM-Plus Experts’ Working Group on Maritime Security Joint Cooperation Activity (EWG-MS JCA) held in Subic Bay, Philippines. The event concluded with a formal closing ceremony on September 25, 2026, marking a productive exchange of maritime security tactics and strategies.
The activity commenced on September 21, 2026, with an opening ceremony at the Naval Operating Base Subic, officiated by the Philippine Navy and co-chaired by Japan. This comprehensive gathering featured a Harbour Phase that included exchanges among subject matter experts focused on peace and security, alongside the ASEAN Navy Chiefs’ Meeting and discussions on the Guidelines for Maritime Interaction (ANCM-GMI). Participants also engaged in senior enlisted leadership discussions, marine environmental protection efforts, and cultural exchanges through sporting events and an International Day cultural show.
On September 22, members of the Indian Navy took part in several exercises, including Operational Synchronisation and a Tabletop Exercise. These sessions were aimed at fostering collaboration and operational readiness. Additionally, a Pre-Sail Conference was held to finalize plans for the Sea Phase. The Indian Navy also extended its outreach by engaging with the local community at the Shepherds of the Hill Center in Zambales, emphasizing the importance of humanitarian cooperation and community support.
The subsequent Sea Phase saw the execution of coordinated operations such as Search and Rescue, Hydrographic Surveys, and activities aimed at casualty and medical evacuations. Other exercises included Deck Landing Qualifications and support operations for vessels in distress. These collaborative efforts not only enhanced coordinated naval operations but also improved interoperability among participating nations.
The successful completion of the EWG-MS JCA highlighted the significance of professional collaboration and practical multilateral engagement in boosting maritime security. India’s active participation in the event reaffirms its dedication to strengthening regional partnerships aligned with the Act East Policy and the MAHASAGAR initiative, which stands for Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions.
